A solar plane with wings as wide as a Boeing 747 and the power of a small motorboat has taken off for the first time.

The plane's wings are covered by solar cells which power four electric motors.

The Solar Impulse is designed by Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard's team - there are plans to fly it around the world in 2012.
