An investigation into leaked e-mails from the UK's Climatic Research Unit (CRU) will be independent, the head of the inquiry has said.

Sir Muir Russell pledged that inquiry will have the freedom to act autonomously despite being funded by the University of East Anglia, where the CRU is based.

A panel of experts are investigating how the CRU e-mails appeared on the web and also if exchanges between CRU researchers show an attempt to manipulate or suppress data.
