NASA: 'Land on asteroid not Moon'

NASA should pursue alternative missions to their current plan of revisiting the Moon, according to experts reviewing the spaceflight programme.

The Human Spaceflight Review Committee believes landing a spaceship on an asteroid or flying around Mars would be a better use of time and resources.

The committee chairman, Norman Augustine, also said the private sector should take on the role of flying astronauts to the International Space Station.

The findings of the report will be used by President Obama and his chief scientist Dr John Holdren as part of their review of NASA's future.
