Thousands of people in the UK regularly spend their evenings gazing up at the heavens through telescopes, picking out constellations or focusing on planets.

As part of the celebrations of the International Year of Astronomy, hundreds of enthusiasts are expected to gather at the University of Surrey on Friday evening for a major stargazing event called The Great Look Up.

Amateur astronomer Julia Gaudelli explains what draws her to the stars and shows off some of the equipment she uses to look at the night sky.
