Scientific vessel Chikyu is investigating the earth beneath the seabed off the coast of Japan in an effort to discover how to predict earthquakes.
On-board scientist, Harold Tobin, says that it will be the first time sensors will be placed directly inside the fault zone at such depths.
The BBC's Richard Black has been finding out how the Chikyu drills to phenomenal depths.
