Abseiling into a live volcano

Earth scientist Dougal Jerram abseils down into the crater of the Erte Ale volcano in Ethiopia's Afar region, in an attempt to create the first laser scan of one of the oldest lava lakes on the planet.

Dr Jerram was part of a BBC-led expedition into the Danakil desert - officially the hottest place on earth.

The Hottest Place On Earth: Episode One on Thursday 19 March on BBC One at 2100 GMT and Episode Two on Thursday 26 March at 2100 GMT.
