Gannet hunting prowess revealed

Footage has revealed gannets' deft underwater hunting skills as they dive to catch sardines.

Previously experts thought that gannets dived into the water to catch the fish before returning to the surface to feast.

But new BBC footage has revealed that the birds "arrow" down to a depth of 10m (30ft) and then swim a further 20m (60ft), before charging around to catch their prey.

Nature's Great Events: The Great Tide is on Wednesday 4 March on BBC One at 2100 GMT and is repeated on Sunday at 1800 GMT
