Lions suffer in Serengeti plains

Over the course of seven months, a BBC team followed a pride of lions on the Serengeti plains.

Thanks to a particularly hard dry season, the lions struggled to find enough food and water, and, as this footage reveals, the young cubs fared particularly badly.

Wildlife cameraman Owen Newman described this as one of the most harrowing stories he had ever filmed.

Nature's Great Events: The Great Migration is on Wednesday 25 February on BBC One at 2100 GMT and is repeated on Sunday at 1800 GMT
