Leap second: Keeper of the pips


David Anderson is presentation editor of BBC Radio 4.

He takes us to the digital control room of BBC Broadcasting House, London, to explain how, on New Year's Eve, the station will add an extra "pip" to the time signal, acknowledging the leap second.

This will reconcile atomic time with the time created by the Earth's rotational movement.
