Berlin Zoo fears it may not be able to afford to keep its star attraction, Knut the polar bear, because of the credit crunch.

Knut has been hand reared at Berlin Zoo since being rejected by his mother, a 20-year-old former performing bear from East Germany.

This footage shows Knut in March 2007, shortly before his first public appearance at the zoo.
