Last year, more than 100 gharials washed up dead on the banks of India's rivers.
For the past year, herpetologist Rom Whitaker, who runs the Madras Crocodile Bank, has been followed by a BBC Natural World team as he has attempted to solve this mystery of this mass-die off.
Here he witnesses 500 gharials hatching simultaneously in India - but could sights like this soon be a thing of the past?
Crocodile Blues is on BBC Two on Tuesday 2 December at 2000GMT as part of the Natural World strand
