Fifty-three pilot whales have died in a mass stranding on Anthony's Beach, Tasmania. Eleven others survived after they were transported to deeper waters.

Rescuers said they hope the whales will rejoin another migratory pod once they swim back into the Bass Strait.

Satellite tracking devices were placed on some of the whales and a reconnaissance plane was going to check their progress on Monday.

Courtney Tims reports.
