A search for the UK's favourite experiment commences at this year's National Science and Engineering Week.

The public can vote online from a list that includes bananas transforming into hammers, coca cola fountains and hydrogen rockets.

This is one of 2,000 public events that will take place between 9 and 18 March.

At the launch of science week, Science Minister Malcom Wicks said: "This is the UK's biggest showcase for science and engineering."

He added: "Since the first science week in 1944, this celebration of science has inspired hundreds of thousands of young people to get involved in finding out about developments in science, engineering and innovation."

The results of the nation's favourite experiment will be announced at the close of science week.

National Science and Engineering Week is coordinated by the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
