Sunday, October 10, 1999 Published at 18:21 GMT 19:21 UK Sci/Tech 'Good response' to Web fundraiser ![]() British band Bush rocked Wembley for NetAid Organisers of a global rock concert broadcast over the Internet will announce on Monday whether they managed to attract their target of one billion viewers. Backers said they were still counting how many people had visited the NetAid Website in support of ending Thrid World debt, saying they have had a good response so far. They will also reveal how much money was donated to NetAid through the site. "We are happy that there has been a very good response to the appeals to call up the NetAid Website," said Cisco Systems marketing Vice-President Larry Lang. He said everyone who tried to access the site was able to do so and there were no technical hitches.
Rapper Wyclef Jean, who came to the US from Haiti as an economic refugee as a child, said he was supporting the site because it contained a section dedicated to helping refugees. Organisers hope the TV, radio and Internet broadcasts will outdo the audience reached by Bob Geldof's plea to end famine in Ethiopia. Yesterday's concerts were the start of a 10-year campaign centred on the Website. Bands performing in front of an 80,000-strong crowd at Wembley included the Eurythmics, Catatonia, Bryan Adams and David Bowie. |
