Dishing up 'food for the future'

Supermarkets may consider producing food on-site, the report predicts
Vitamin-packed cigarettes, PCs which heat workers' meals at their desks and supermarkets that grow produce on-site could be a flavour of things to come, according to a report.

Creative design consultants Pearlfisher drew up the vision of convenience foods of the future after consulting food and drink experts in London and New York.

Their report says bars and restaurants may even turn to producing "mood food" menus to satisfy diners' tastebuds depending on whether they are happy, sad or in the mood for love.

The company's managing partner, Mike Branson, says the ideas contained in A Taste of Things to Come are not as far-fetched as they may seem.

He said: "Some of our ideas may seem provocative, but they are based on a sound understanding of what social trends will influence our eating and drinking habits, coupled with extensive research and experience in the field."

'Indulgent' products

The report predicts there would be a huge market for new "indulgent" health items such as cigarettes which pumped out minerals and vitamins instead of nicotine.

The hi-tech foodie world of the future may even have cookers that are programmed to automatically prepare meals while a video of a celebrity chef talks diners through the recipe.

Computers could also have attachments to heat food and cook while workers carry on typing, completely doing away with the need for lunch breaks.

Supermarkets may also respond to fears over the ever-widening food chain by producing more of their food on-site, it says.

"A lot of food manufacturers will have to adapt or risk being left behind," adds Mr Branson.
