The impact of sanctions on Sudan

One of the main objectives of Sudan's elections, as far as the government is concerned, is to help the country end its isolation from the West by proving its democratic credentials.

President Omar al Bashir is keen to see them rehabilitate Sudan, especially in the eyes of America, which has imposed sanctions on the country for years.

Zeinab Badawi has been to the capital Khartoum to investigate how these sanctions affect ordinary Sudanese.

World News Today with Zeinab Badawi is broadcast weekdays at 1900, 1930 and 2000 GMT on the BBC World News channel. Find out more information about regional broadcast times here.
