The rise of the Kalashnikov


The Kalashnikov or AK-47 is every guerrilla's favourite weapon.

It's the Ford Escort of marksmanship. Cheap, reliable, deadly and omnipresent, favoured by insurgents but also by governments.

How did it gain such prominence? That's the question which author CJ Chivers has explored in his new book simply called The Gun. He joined Matt Frei in the studio to discuss it.
