Artist Matt Mitchell wanted to connect with the experiences of US service members in Iraq and Afghanistan on a personal level and launched an ambitious project.
For nearly five years, the painter from Amherst, Massachusetts has been working on portraits of military and civilian veterans - with the hopes of completing 100 such works.
In this first person account, Mitchell talks about his motivation for the project and what the veterans have shared of their experience.
