Church of the Nativity attacked
Franciscan Monks at the Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem
Three explosions have been reported at the Church of the Nativity today
Reports are coming in that Israeli troops have blown off a door to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Those taking refuge inside the Church say that they've been fired on, though there are no reports yet of any injuries. Latest estimates suggest 200 people are trapped - with others having sought sanctuary in other churches in the area.

The Israelis deny they have attacked any church, but insist those inside belong to militant groups - and must surrender.

A few moments after reports of explosions at the church, our reporter Jon Manel spoke to two Palestinian men who said they were amongst 200 sheltering inside.

In the meantime, an EU delegation led by the Spanish Foreign Minister has arrived in Tel Aviv - but has already received its first snub. Israel has said the delegation will not be allowed to meet Yasser Arafat, the Palestinians say if Mr Arafat is kept incommunicado, no one from the Palestinian Authority will meet the Europeans.

World at One speaks to one of the Israeli Defence Force negotiators, Lieutenant Colonel Olivier Rafowitz and Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw
