Abbey card delays reach six weeks
Sharon Stead

Working Lunch viewers have been telling us of their frustration at being left without a debit card.

Abbey failed to send replacements for many customers whose cards expired in the past few weeks.

We first reported the problem on the programme on 31st July, when the bank blamed flooding at its card facility in Gloucestershire.

Abbey said at the time it was confident the majority of the missing cards would arrive by the next day.

72 days

But viewer Sharon Stead told the programme she's been without a card for 72 days.

"I can't access my cash without driving to my nearest Abbey, paying for parking and queueing up for sometimes 20 minutes", she said.

She has however recently received 2 PIN notifications and a letter from the Abbey asking if she would like to apply for a debit card as their records show she doesn't have one.

Matthew Leggett, whose card expired at end of July has rung the Abbey call centre four times but to no avail.

He is now considering moving his business to another bank, which he describes as "a real shame" having been with the Abbey for 16 years.

£250 compensation

Abbey say they experienced some issues with card distribution in August, but claim these have now been rectified.

In a statement they told Working Lunch: "We would expect people to have received their cards and we will look into why any individual customer has not yet received their card."

After the programme spoke to Sharon Abbey promised that a new card would arrive by the end of the week.

She also received a phone call from the bank to say they would be giving her £250 compensation.

Viewers still waiting for a card to arrive can contact the Abbey on 08459 724 724.
