Remember to pack your EHIC
European Health Insurance Card
Anecdotal evidence suggests EHIC card applications are processed promptly
The old E111 certificate for travellers has now been replaced by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

The EHIC comes in the shape of a handy wallet-sized card which entitles the holder to free or reduced cost medical treatment when in Europe.

Cover is provided in all 25 European Union countries, plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

E111 certificates became invalid after 1st January 2006.

The good news is that the card is easy to apply for and absolutely free, although the Department of Health cautions that it shouldn't take the place of comprehensive travel insurance.

Applications can made over the phone, on 0845 606 2030, or via the internet - there's a link on right of this page.
