The Coors Experience

The Coors Experience is a key element in the company's induction programme

Based in Burton-upon-Trent, Coors Brewers has a 20% share of the UK brewing market, producing some of Britain's best known beer brands such as Carling.

Just think...

What objectives do you think Coors has?

How would it go about maintaining the high standards it expects to achieve?

Getting to know the business

  • The Coors Experience day

The Coors Experience is a key element in the company's induction programme.

It is held at the Coors visitor centre in Burton every few months, and recent recruits from all over the country are invited to attend.

Julie Buxton admits she was expecting the first Coors Experience day to be a typical company induction, lots of listening and long presentations.

    But she was proved wrong.

"It was actually a great day, balanced with the right amount of information and plenty of interaction - it really made you feel part of the company," says Julie.

"The team working exercise was excellent," she adds.

Julie was also impressed by the quality and enthusiasm of the presentations.

    Just think...

    What is 'induction'?

    Why is it important?

    Working for Coors

Coors is aims to attract the brightest and best people in the UK.

It needs all sorts of people and aims to provide opportunities for them to make the most of themselves.

Mark Smith has made the most of these opportunities.

Mark left school at 16 with few qualifications.

But he has gone on to defy the doubters by achieving an MBA before his 30th birthday.

As he recalls, the combination of his personal determination and Coors Brewers' commitment to training and developing its people, has proved to be a potent one.

"I should think that over the last 13 years, the company has invested approaching £100,000 in helping me achieve my various qualifications," says Mark.

"It's a phenomenal level of support, for which I am incredibly grateful," he adds.

There are training opportunities for all.

  • The Certificate of Management

Employees on the Certificate in Management (CM) course recently travelled thousands of miles in whistle-stop visits to three different European breweries.

They were fulfilling one of the CM modules, which requires all delegates to organise and participate in a three-day event on the subject of excellence.

Alison Britton, Mark Grey and Helen Broughton flew to Enschede in Holland, home of the massive Grolsch brewery, which opens soon.

"It was fantastic to see the brewery and, of course, enjoy the Grolsch experience in its homeland," says Alison, who works in human resources.

  • Master in Business Administration

If you work for Coors Brewers and you're on a course that includes completing an 'international consultancy project' where better to do the consulting than in Coors' heartland?

That's what three groups of UK employees have done as part of their Masters in Business Administration programme.

They each spent around a week in Golden, Colorado, working on the project, building relations with their American counterparts.

Just managing to squeeze in some skiing in between all the hard work!

    Just think...

Why do you think Coors invest in their staff?

Why do you think people want to work for a company that trains them to a high level?

Why is it important to continue to train people even when they have been working for the company for a long time?

How does training contribute to motivation?
