The Scottish Conservatives under review

How do you make Scots love the Tories? It's a question Scottish Conservatives have been asking themselves ever since the 1997 general election when the party was annihilated north of the Border.

At the last election it managed to win just one Scottish seat. It's done better in elections to the Scottish Parliament but that's mainly because of proportional representation. A commission headed by the former Scottish Office minister Lord Sanderson has been looking at ways of winning back the affections of Scottish voters and is due to report on Friday.

The biggest dilemma facing Lord Sanderson is over whether to give the Scottish Tories a more distinct identity.

There's even been a suggestion that they should become more or less independent of that party at Westminster as Chris Wimpress now reports.
