Is the future bright?

These are uncertain times for the Liberal Democrats.

On this programme three weeks ago, Nick Clegg conceded that in the current financial climate the Lib Dems could not promise realistically to abolish student tuition fees or provide free personal care.

To add to the uncertainty, Chris Rennard, the electoral svengali credited with a string of Lib Dem by-election victories is standing down this summer.

He used to tell his party faithful that they could win everywhere. But is that still true?

To discuss where the Lib Dems go from here are two prominent party activists: Mark Littlewood, founding member of the group Liberal Vision which campaigns within the Lib Dems for a stronger economic-liberal message and Simon Titley, a contributing editor to "Liberator", a party magazine with a social-liberal outlook.

Did Simon Titley believe that Nick Clegg's recent announcements represented astute political positioning?
