Downtown Boathouse

Map shows the location of Downtown Boathouse

It's rare that you get something for nothing in the big city, but at Downtown Boathouse it is possible to hire kayaks, experience New York from a whole new angle and pay nothing for the privilege.

This is thanks to a hard-working band of local volunteers who dedicate their time to this non-profit organisation.

Although there are two smaller outlets in Manhattan, the Boathouse's main location is at Pier 96 in in Hell's Kitchen - an area of New York which was formerly one of the most deprived in the city.

The area has been slowly gentrifying since the 1980s and its gritty reputation is gradually receding - though real estate agents have been known to prefer the names 'Clinton' or 'Midtown West' to Hell's Kitchen when advertising properties here.
