Abdel Zaher Bookshop

In the heart of old Cairo, next to the Al-Azhar mosque, a unique shop survives that is testament to the ancient art of book binding. The Abdel Zaher Bookshop lies amongst the grocers, vegetable stalls and barber shops in a crowded laneway.

It opened in 1936 and little has changed since then - this atelier preserves one of Cairo's finest historical arts. Book binding has always been at the cultural heart of Egypt's history and in ancient times, the city was filled with workshops and skilled bookbinders.
