Located in the heart of old Cairo, Al-Azhar Park offers stunning views over the city. The lush green landscaped gardens, lakes and fountains are a welcome break from the heat and dust of central Cairo.
Al-Azhar is a gift from the Aga Khan, who wanted to create a park for the citizens of Cairo. The only central location big enough was a 500-year-old mound of rubbish and rubble rising high above Cairo's City of the Dead.
During the park's conversion from a rubbish dump, the Ayyubid wall was discovered, constructed by Salah El Din more than 800 years ago.
