John has been with the BBC almost since he stopped wearing short trousers, starting his career in Cardiff as a trainee TV cameraman.
Soon after, the world of radio beckoned and he started working with announcers in the continuity suite.
After a spell as a studio manager, he started announcing and reading the news for the World Service and BBC Radio 4 before joining BBC Radio 2.
He's married with two grown-up children and lives in Sussex, where he spends his spare time playing the organ and building sheds.
