RADIO 2 NEWSREADERS
Alan was born in Hollywood (Worcestershire) and went to school in Birmingham and then on to Birmingham University. He decided against a career in law, opting instead for the world of showbusiness (in the form of BBC Radio Birmingham) and then BBC Radio Devon. In 1987 he joined Radio 2's presentation department at Broadcasting House in London, and now leads a team of announcers which keeps the network on air 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Alan is also the "Voice of the Balls" - calling out the numbers twice a week on the National Lottery draw.
John has been with the BBC almost since he stopped wearing short trousers, starting his career in Cardiff as a trainee TV cameraman. Soon after, the world of radio beckoned and he started working with announcers in the Continuity Suite. After a spell as a studio manager, he started announcing and reading the news for the World Service and Radio Four before joining Radio Two. He's married with two grown-up children and lives in Sussex, where he spends his spare time playing the organ and building sheds.
Fran was born in London but within two years had emigrated with her family to Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), returning after five years to live near Bournemouth. Fran was educated at Boscombe Convent and then took a bi-lingual secretarial course at what is now the University of Westminster. Her French shorthand was never that strong, and after several years she joined the local independent radio station in Bournemouth as a technical operator. Fran moved to Radio Two in 1990 as a trainee announcer.
Fenella joined the BBC straight from school as a trainee secretary ... from there she worked in television production until Radio Four took her on as a trainee announcer. She then turned freelance, working in commercial radio and television as a presenter and doing voice-overs. Fenella later took time off for a while to set up a venture selling African crafts and circus paraphernalia. Her hobbies are travel, food, Forteana, diving and DIY (not necessarily at the same time) as well as long walks with her two rescue dogs.
Colin went to school at Wembley in London and began his broadcasting career in the 1960s doing administrative work for Granada and Westward Television. He then joined Radio Caroline, before becoming a club DJ and later moving to Radio One. Colin joined Radio 2 in 1973, where he presented various programmes and started reading the news. Over the years he's made a number of television appearances - he's the regular spokesman for the UK jury in the Eurovision Song Contest. |
