Four schools have been named as winners of this year's Schools Question Time competition. The winning schools are The Belvedere Academy Liverpool, St Ninian's High School in Douglas, Isle of Man, Whitley Bay High School and Worksop College. Two students from each school will now join David Dimbleby and the Question Time team for a workshop in May. They will also get the chance to see behind the scenes of a Question Time production in July. "Schools Question Time has been running annually since 2003 but the overall standard this year has been higher than ever," said the BBC's Lizz Loxam. None of the winning schools had reached the final before.
The broader aim of Schools Question Time is to help teachers nationwide by supporting the citizenship curriculum, helping improve students' public speaking and listening skills, and engaging young people in society and politics. Initially schools were invited to register for a free online education resource pack to support directly the teaching of citizenship and political literacy for secondary school pupils in the classroom. Curriculum based work sheets based on speaking and listening, enquiry and debate, teamwork and critical self-analysis formed the basis of the pack.
