Warsi backs Home Secretary in cat deportation row

Conservative Party Co-Chairman Baroness Warsi has backed Home Secretary Theresa May's criticism of the Human Rights Act, in which she said the welfare of a pet cat was an issue at a deportation hearing for a Bolivian student.

"Human rights of which we are all proud are there to protect the victim," she said but "the Human Rights Act ..... has got to a stage where it is producing perverse judgments".

Justice Secretary Ken Clarke said the cat story was "nonsense" but later said he "regretted" his "colourful language" .
