Conservative Party chairman Eric Pickles said unreliable transport and long hours at Parliament justified his claiming expenses for a second home even though his constituency was in the Home Counties.
He later said of his performance: "It was like a car crash in slow motion, and which you're just trying to steer away [from], and the more I tried to steer away, the worse it was."
