This week we tried something a bit different and took your texts, emails and tweets into the show. Our three guests also very kindly stayed on to answer some of them. You can find all the tweets gathered under #POLSHOW, and here are some of the texts and emails with the replies from the politicians.

Dear sir jim knight talking about the unemployed back to work they could not the unemployed back to work in the boom i have been waiting for ten years
John Emmett, Portsmouth

The British Public need to appreciate the strengths and values of our Prime Minister Gordon Brown and resist the deliberate and malicious media propaganda especially at a time when we need to pull together and support the Government so that they can concentrate on pushing forward with their policies andobjectives to the ultimate benefit of our country.
J Hand, Hants

GORDON is the VERY BEST PERSON as PM Respected by other world leaders. and intelligent people should APPRECIATE his seriousness in dealing with IMPORTANT issues!!
Anon

Why is it that now we own controlling interest in a number of banks and have a housing crisis why does the government not take the housing stock from the banks and use them for social housing.
Tony Robottom. Berkshire

ENOUGH WITH CITIZEN I AM SUBJECT OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II
DENISE IN DORSET

The parties haven't got the problem yet. The politicians are supposed to represent us first and foremost. They all should have told their constituencies the system is being corrupted. Not ignored it or abused it. The gap between politician and party must widen. Clegg is right. Throw it out and start again.
Peter, Dorchester

abolish the whips- have a free vote on all things
Anon

SHOULD THE PUBLIC BE MADE AWARE OF THE MONETARY COST OF A GENERAL ELECTION AND THEN SHOW ALTERNATIVES WITH THE COST I.E. PUT THE SAME AMOUNT INTO MEANINGFUL TRAINING FOR THE UNSKILLED UNEMPLOYED. SIXTY POUNDS A WEEK FOR THESE PEOPLE IS UNACCEPTABLE LIVING ALLOWANCE AND MAY INCREASE CRIME FROM DESPERATE PEOPLE. SHAME ON THE GREEDY POLITICIANS.
IRENE:-)

Politicians think they know best they do the things that they think is right for us and do not listen to what the public wont they are to keen to slag each others party off
Anon

Politicians cannot be trusted!
Keith, Oxford

Ban all whips
Anon

How can mps who have fiddled the system be allowed to just stand down they should be prosecuted or do we have them and us justice system
Paul

I'm a 47 yr old patient on oxygen 24/7 with End stage COPD. I spend my life now campaigning for better end of life care for non cancer illnesses . I go to the All party parliamentary palliative & Hospice care group meeting . To get our voices heard and give the ministers an idea you its like fighting alone for care we do not receive. I feel the biggest insult is i have to fund myself but the MPS GET PAID TO ATTEND + CAN CLAIM THEIR EXPENSES. For 3 yrs i have been promised a chance to speak 1 to 1 with the Health Ministers /Sectary . So i can get across were more funding is badly needed. Perhaps i should stand for parliament.
Mandy Paine

Can there be any justification for the failed attempt to exempt MP's exes from the Freedom of Info Act?
Anon

It is about time voting is made compulsory
Anon

We've got improved job centres, why weren't recycling plants invested in to create jobs?
Anon

Politicians are dishonest. They think the public are fools and can t think for themselves. They never give direct answers to direct question. They have had their say, we need a general election to have our say.
Gerald from Reading

There should be a general election NOW and those who have fiddled their expenses should be banned from standing and prosecuted.
Chris - Southampton

As a Tory voter, the last thing I want is to see is Gordon Brown leaving - leave him where he is and he'll win us the next election...
C.B. IoW.

As a small business owner who works hard and pays tax and vat with very little help from government. I am outraged to see that the money i pay in taxis wasted by the mp's . This money could have been used to help the country back on to its feet.
Chris from Bournemouth

Gordon Brown is in danger of becoming like Robert Mugabe, where he unilaterally decides who runs the country. At least, Mugabe was voted in.
Gary from Thatcham

Coming to the UK as a new immigrant from a developing country, I am amazed with the expense scam. How can this happen in 21st century Britain?
Vijay Pereira, Lecturer, Portsmouth

The parties need to remove the cloak of secrecy and self reward from parliament. Only then will the public regain the trust in politics.
Praetorion

If these are unprecedented times then the British thing to do and by i British i mean for QUEEN AND COUNTRY would be for the CROWN to dissolve government and call a general election ...
Mr Bear, Brighton

Don't all m.p.s that belong to the same party pat each other on the back when it goes wrong the knives come out
Anon

Not only should Brown go, he forced Blair out and is hopefully getting his just deserts. His actions have been not far short of treason.
Anon

I would like to see the end of politicians being obsessed by political correctness!!
Anon

Tell gordon to call a leadership election as john major did then we will know if he is wanted
John, Weymouth

Is it fair that the vast majority of the media ie the press and BBC ARE POLITICALLY BIASED.
Ray Taughan

Jim knight, the best way to respond to this emergency is to call a general election, let the people decide.
Peter, Portsmouth.

I think gordon brown should stay and sort out the economy, along with all the other politicians.
Blake, Portsmouth

Why are we still paying mp's who where de-selected by the star chamber
Colin Prosser Bournemouth

We should now start to look at the way unqualified local councillors waste vast amounts of taxpayers money, and make them fully accountable. The total could probably pay for more research in cancer.
Anon

Create jobs in waste.
Tony - Portsmouth.

MPs should get luncheon vouchers and all their second homes state owned
Anon

General election now!!
Anon

What amazes me with the expenses revelation is the complete lack of remorse by the MP's concerned. They seem totally living in another world and do not seem to realize what they have done. They have a complete innocence about themselves and an air of complete indifference to what they have done. This is what I find hard to swallow and accept. I think this whole matter has highlighted the need for a complete change to the political system and systems that work. We are the people that put politicians in place and therefore they are ultimately answerable to the electorate. A disappointed elector
John Ward

Dan Hannan replied:
What we now need are hard, practical changes. But, to implement such an agenda, we need a new Parliament. Not every MP has behaved badly: but those who will be re-elected need the authority of a fresh mandate.

Jim Knight
Jim Knight

Jim Knight replied:
John - If we start again, what political system would you want? And would you want a representative from your community? Would you want that person to live in your community? Would you want them to then meet face-to-face somewhere? Would you then want to pay them to be able to do that and on a par with others with similar levels of responsibility?

Sandra Gidley replied:
Have to say that I have been surprised by some of the indifference too. I hope that once we sort the expenses issue out we can move on to wider reform All the best

Dave Hepplewhite emailed:
I'm fed up with politicians beginning their well-rehearsed answers with: "What the public want....." "What the electorate want...." "What the people want...." "What the voters want....." This is always the opening lines of their response to some sort of direct criticism or probing question for which they have no satisfactory answer. Instead they try to justify their actions by saying it's what we want! They clearly don't have the first idea what we want, and I, for one, get a bit 'peed off' with being told what I want.

Dan Hannon
Dan Hannon

Dan Hannan replied:
You are so right! My wife is forever making this point to me, and I've tried never to do it myself.

Gordon Duff emailed:
Considering the access to technology we now have from our homes....and the desire of the public to get their message across to Gordon Brown...why is it that only 64,000 or so names are currently on the Downing Street e-petition, calling for him to resign?? This is their opportunity to directly step up the pressure for him to go...!! Come on Britain...

Sandra Gidley
Sandra Gidley

Sandra Gidley replied:
I think a lot of people are aware of this petition - many want Gordon to go but my feeling is that others I speak to want a sense of calm restored.

Trevor Prout in Fareham emailed:
USA had a election in this recession and are better for it, so why cant we better off with a election. I fill let down with this lot and want a change and a new start.

Jim Knight replied:
We need a bit more stability first then we must have an election

Hello, i have a Bsc Health Studies degree but cant find a job.
Catherine, Reading

The economy is like an athlete. Fitness requires good circulation. For over 20 years politicians of the World have let the richest people scoop off billions, with little tax. If a person has most of their blood go to the head and little recirculation, there would be a collapse of health comparable to the present collapse in the economy. The richest people benefit the most from a fit economy and tax must be automatic. Comparable to brains benefiting most from high circulation in a fit body . Bloated heads spouting reasons to give more billions to the toxic rich will not make the body fit. Tax and produce what we need! We need sustainable energy. Free solar panels for all, paid for by tax from the richest, is one way to revive World economy and help the rich feel better! I hope this is helpfull,
Phil

Whats going 2 happen 2 all the people who wil probably never be able qualify 4 anything, stay on the dole? Be outcasts, u cant have everyone qualified

Where is the sense in training plumbers - when there's 1000s unemployed
MICK HOUGHTON

Obviously people in leigh park are short on cash - spending their money/benefits on drinks on a Sunday morning!
Anon

Why on earth did the Government close all the Jobcentres in the rural areas? It is impossible for people to get to those in towns and the phones are always engaged. Training is only available in the cities. Not helpful if only one bus a week.
L. Benfield, Dorset

The government must make unemployed people do socially essential work 4 their "dole" They MUST offer REAL effective SKILLS training 2 ALL unemployed from day 1. Gender & race are irrelevant!
Alan Mabey

Why are credit card interest rates going up when bank rates have gone down we are finding it a struggle to keep up with monthly minimum payments which have trebled over the last six months,
g.gilchrist

Remove all extra taxes english pay eg barnet £1600 for scots etc etc

Why doesn't anyone question the capitalist system?
Anon

Why not make companies pay redundancy to the employee at 2 years salary plus a tax to government this would stop a great number of redundancies
Anon

National service bring back could work for state
Anon

Everyone should keep their own house in order instead of blaming everything on the government. My husband and I have held it together through 2 recessions neither of us has ever relied on the government or signed on the dole but worked hard and brought up our 2 children on our own. The youngest has just graduated and the oldest has started his own company , bought his house and has his first baby on the way. They both are a huge credit to us and we are really proud of them equally. We have had a hard working life but a rewarding one. I would stress that I was a stay at home mum luckily it was the right decision. I wish everyone with babies would do the same although we have not had a holiday for years that is not a priority nor is a new kitchen nor manicures or hair dresser appointments. We should stop babies having babies.
Anon

Full min wage is now 22 years old not 21.

A national credit union run by the Post Office is what is needed to help small businesses + households.

We are expected to eat healthy when in fact it is cheaper not to. Its ok to do all these cooking courses but when you work you cannot attend and not much on offer for workers who cannot afford to pay for courses later or have no child care
Anon

All final salary pension schemes must cease NOW. Trades UNIONS must not regard such pensions as deferred salary anymore.
Anon

People need to become more realistic, the government just won t be able to hold everyone's hand in these very tough times.
Martha, Tadley, Hants

Hi I've just been laid off. Does the employment minister realise jobcentreplus employ people designated to stop jobseekers entering its premises. Surely legislation should in place where all jobs must be advertised in jobcentreplus!
Anon

Hello when i worked in personnel at hewlett packard 24 years ago the company asked all first line managers to take a 10 percent pay cut and stopped all staff profit sharing to avoid redundancy! guess what it worked! all was reinstated when times got better!

What about the people who are non academic hardworking people being offered 4 to 6 pounds per hour?
Anon

The bank staff should be grateful to have kept their job when many of us have also missed out on bonus due to the banks mis-management.

Why bankers get bonuses, yet i get no interest on my savings?
Anon

Its ok training people where are the jobs people on benefits have had a rise because of the bargains in the shops
Anon

Newly unemployed if previously long term employed should be able to have retraining immediately. Not have to wait 3-6 months.
Diana, oxford

Hi lots of people may not have been made redundant yet but they have had 2 cut back as hours/days have been cut at work, they r hard workers but haven't had a bonus or Xmas party/benefits and wont 4 a long time 2 come. Why should bankers?
Anon

Perhaps if people are trying to struggle along on very little they could talk to some of the pensioners who have had to manage on very little all through then good times!!
Pensioner Southampton

My son put himself thru a course with the princes trust and got pt college course the job centre hasn't helped at all and keeps threatening 2 cut his benefit!

My husband amongst many others has been forced to work away from home during the week. Not only is he paying travelling expenses but needs to pay for accommodation. There was no alternative following redundancy

IF THE GOVERNMENT WAS NOT SO HELL BENT ON APPEASING EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT WE WOULD HAVE JOBS FOR EVERYONE SHOULD LOOK AFTER BRITISH WORKERS AND PEOPLE THAT HAVE VOTED FOR THEM _ BUT IN THIS CASE GORDON BROWN WAS NOT EVEN ELECTED
JENNY CARROLL, BASINGSTOKE

We have 2 give up on some of the shopping & buy the shops cheap stuff. Trying 2 get a job in Southampton, u got no chance. My boyfriend cant get a job, he was working, but would not drive out in the snow so they let him go.
Jiminae O'Halloran

Six unemployed for every vacancy. The true issue is that there should be no vacancies because the jobs have been taken by those unemployed in equal number.
Anon

For somebody to say that living on £220 per month JSA is an on/off switch is just offensive
Anon

The government are doing training for long term unemployed. Is it not the case that they do not want a job. Give new unemployed people the training. They are the workers who need help
Anon

I have now been unemployed for nearly a year after full employment for 15 yrs...there is no point in going to a jobcentre as help is not really there...u become a number and a burden....I applied for a vacancy and was told there was about 220 replies...government needs really to waken up!!!
Anon

Benefits should be linked to past payment. Why is it that the hardest workers are kicked in the teeth??
Richard, Havant

Gordon brown is the most hated man in Britain why doesn't he just give his job to someone who can do it better
Anon

I cant believe people who genuinely have lost there jobs cannot claim any money and are losing everything
Anon

Why can u only get help upskilling after u have lost ur job.
Pat, Gosport

As pensioners we r loosing 3OO pm having worked all our lives. This due to interest rates. We feel the forgotten generation.
Anon

I come out of jail and have had to sign on but i cant get no help with funding with re retraining i been told if i go on to full time training and i have to sign off how am i meant to retrain when i cant afford to because i would have no money
Anon

I have lost my job due to a non fault car crash. Benefits are £100 per week! So i have to starve! I have to pay for prescriptions & council tax! Where are my human rights?
Kevin, Hampshire

I am a taxi driver. My takings are down by over 30 percent. My outgoings are higher. I am paying 19000 pound per year in expenses and i am not earning 15000 pound per year in wages. I work 7 nights per week and cannot afford to take a week off. What is the government doing for me. Absolutely nothing.
Anon

I would be willing to bet that at least three quarters of the jobs you mention are at minimum rate.
Mark of Gosport

Benefits should be linked to past payment. Why is it that the hardest workers are kicked in the teeth??

We won't help our children if mums of children so young are putting pressure to go to work. My daughter is a wonderful mum talking and teaching her girls. No one else in child care could do what she does family is so important.
Anon

Surestart in Weymouth is great baby Fran has been going since she was 6 months old she gets so much out of it. I would encourage mums and dads to take their little ones along.
Rachel

Children spend far too much time at school. There needs to be more family time, with mums at home to nurture a more loving, caring family home, organising activities with neighbours, etc, as some did when they were toddlers. This is lost when children spend the best part of the day at school. it wd benefit society 2 pay women 2 stay
Anon

If you are considering becoming a RESPONSIBLE parent. you MUST be prepared to put your own life on hold to a degree. your children s needs MUST come before your own, no matter how difficult this might be. YOU choose to have children, YOU do the job properly.
Judy, Worthing

I am 69. When I went 2 school aged 3 and a half I could read and write. I am told my grandpa spent hours and hours reading 2 me, whilst pointing 2 the words he was reading. He had no special skills-he spent oodles of time with me. At the age of 8 or 10 I read my way through Dickens because of this excellent start.
Anon

The materialism you are talking about goes right through society and until people become more important than money you will have problems. Families should be able to survive on one wage.
Anon

Most of the mothers 2day r 2 young. Getting pregnant so they can get benefits and housing. The Young fathers clear off. And The kids seem 2 do as they like.
Anon

Hidden abuse issues... We need re-parenting centres... We as a country have been taught not to feel therefore we cannot engage and children need to feel. We have lots of adult children. Children raising children. Its deeper than just education.
Anon

When i had my children nearly 40 yrs ago we had problems - my husband was depressed + money was tight but we always found time 2 spend time with our children + they started school knowing al basic skills.
Irene Williams, Andover

Many parents have lost or never learned the skills of playing and being with their children..Technology has replaced basic parenting skills..ie Xbox tv and in bedrooms!
Melanie, Gosport

Less TV. More one 2 one conversation
Anon

I'm at home all the time and i talk all the time with my two year old so does her 6 year old sister. Lots of love and cuddles in our house and yet my two year old don't talk much.
Anon

I have a son who finds it difficult to sit still because he is very active and not because he doesn't get attention. What about the schools adjusting their teaching to meet the offer of my child e.g more practical learning and art. To expect a 5,6,7 yr old to sit still all day is ridiculous.
Anon

Mothers are being forced back to work how can they have the time to prepare their kids.
Anon

Much more complex... Sum parents cannot emotionally engage with their kids...many reasons why
Anon

The reason for lack of parenting skills is because labour government has made it unavoidable for mothers have to work and have little time spent with children
Anon

I m one of a U3A group who are mentoring year 8 students whose 1st language isn't English.
Dinah, Guildford

we always talked 2 our children i think the problem is babies being dumped mothers going back 2 work b cos we live in a materialistic work the first 5 years r important
Mary Barlow

It is not the fault of education nor the fault of parents, but the fault of the lack of education of the parents. More classes such as the ones shown today would no doubt reduce the number of children unable to start school unable to properly communicate.
Stuart Isle of Wight

I do blame the parents they should be responsible for the first learning in any child who else has hands on opportunity.
June Fletcher

Girls are having babies to young. They are leaving school without proper skills and therefore cannot pass those skills on. If we clamped down on making life so easy for these girls maybe they would have there babies later in life when they have the life skills to cope.
Barbara, West Sussex

You're absolutely right, poor communication skills is a huge issue through to adulthood. The two areas we often fail in are having children and having relationships. More focus on these would definitely help.
Viv East

Sunday 01 February 2009

Why are the government offering payments to firms who take on people who have been unemployed for over 6 months. When often these are people who don't want to work and have been managing on income support for sometime when they should concentrate on people who want to work and Need to work because they have financial commitments such as mortgagees etc. And cannot manage on income support and could stand to loose their house and have to be rehoused.
Anon

Dont want to give my name as a support worker i work with people who have so much coming in a month i am on a low wage its not fair that im not left with nothing how can the law work out that some people needs are greater then others
Anon

The minister says that the vat cut has saved us money. Rubbish! Talk to the local retailers and basically if you can disprove their statement you will be a miracle worker plus the fact that they adjusted the petrol/ diesel price to have no effect. Amazed at the government detrits.

Anon

The bnp did predict the credit crunch and recession plus european workers are the smallest threat to british jobs compared to the one and half million known non eu immigrants in Briton since the traitors labour have been destroying Britain
Anon

According 2 this government small businesses employed 4 million people may be it's time they cut taxes by half so they can stay open and carry on to employ
Anon

The vat cut is a useless measure i have just had a pension statement 8000 loss in one year off a very small pension . Not good when u are 58 and planning retirement.
P Dorling

Lets get back to free trade only in eu. Charity begins at home, not in the eu. Brown has lost the plot.
Tony Blackie

When will the government admit they got it wrong on the joining of the eu and that its not working for europe.
Jon Young, Andover

We are putting young people on apprenticeship schemes with a promise of a salary at the end. Then eastern europeans come in and work for half that amount.

I spent 30 years with esso unless all these contractors are fluent, they wont work. think safety induction, method statements & risk assessment. safety is paramount. refineries can go bang.
John

I run a growing small business which is unusual at the moment, I tried to contact the jobcentre through various means enquiring about what support is available to us as a small business looking for staff. No one responded to me or a friend of mine who tried to do same. Disgusting!
Alex Simmons

Mandleson said we can work abroad - only at the expense of disintegrating families even further - even more kids without parents to guide them
Anon

I've done all these training schemes! They are completely and utterly useless! And after Gordon Brown, to backtrack on saying "British jobs for Briti workers", has irrefutably, that he has not only continuously betraying British workers, but has become the enemy of the British people! Any government, that puts the rights of foreign workers over their own people, is a traitor of the people of this country!

Ban junk mail unless people sign up to request it - the post office unions tried to sack a postman who said that and the government have the power to stop tonnes of junk mail being distributed - why should people have to pay to dispose of it - put it back in postbox with a big cross on it until the government listen
Marcus Christophas

All the problems about recycling and landfill will go away when every council adopts incineration as a policy. Easy to manage, very little waste, can be used to heat houses no landfill required. All rubbish could be collected and immediately disposed of with absolutely no threat to the environment and is a much cheaper alternative.
A.V. Ringwood

Recycle bullxxxt there r companies that produce biodegradable packaging that could almost completely wipe out the waste problem what coverage do they get???
Anon

In France they burn their waste saving the country money and no fill in lands are used why can t we do the same
Anon

Why do supermkts throw fish & other foods in the bin at the end of every day, scandal!
Anon

Supermkts do not cater 4 the lg proportion of singles or charge higher rates 4 individual items esp salads & veg. People who dont recycle shd pay higher rates
Anon

We asked our council for a trade recycle bin was 2 time s as expensive

Easter eggs are packed in plastic that the green bins will not take
Anon

U dont need note-pads, cut up cereal cartons etc, then recycle them
Anon

I work at a supermarket in Andover. They waste food every day. So much it makes me wonder why they haven t offered to give to charities and homeless people.
Jon Young

Here in eastleigh hants food waste is collected weekly whilst ord waste & recyclables alternate weeks. This works very well here. The food waste separated out is key. That could go 2 a digester, & the methane produced collected for fuel!
Carol, Hampshire

We live in Hove. We have one recycle basket that is taken by the council once a fortnight. They now tell us we must recycle lesser items than before. Brighton has a state of the art recycle unit what s going on?!?

I agree manufacturers should be targeted.. How about going back to the days when you re use your bottles take it back get it refilled with lemonade for example, and ban plastic wrapping, i would prefer my cucumber without in any way. And weekly collection is a necessity.
Anon

My parents live in devon near honiton and they dont have to recycle why is this?
Anon

Incinerators are far the best they give out cleaner air

Biggest culprits of food waste are supermarkets. Force us to buy big packs when many of us are in small families. Paul Cunningham

As a pensioner i would prefer to have the price dropped than BOG.
V Perry Southampton

Why did they stop giving pigs the food waste?
Anon

Tax the suppliers who use to much packaging to make their good look bigger ie easter eggs
Anon

Legislate to make manufacturers produce more easily recyclable packaging i.e. fewer types of plastic.
Jozef, Bognor Regis

Y r we not burning our waste to produce energy
Anon

I do not think we should pay 2 recycle. As we pay so much as it is. R tax has gone up & then we paid council tax. I think lab is just being greedy.

Why should the public recycle when the government allow businesses to over package and use un necessary packaging. Fine them for un necessary packaging.
Max, Brighton

Why don't you tackle supermarkets and manufacturers who are overloading customers with excessive packaging. Especially since most of this packaging is due to the need to protect products during long journeys created by unnecessary importation and disorganised distribution systems.
Claire, Oxford

We should be paid 4 re cycling. I have very little waste but Horsham do not provide me with a doorstep collection so i take it 2 Crawley west Sussex who are fantastic they have a red top bin 4 all co mingled recycling
Anon

Our recycling is good but don't provide for plastic bottles and bags
Anon

In Germany supermarkets have machines that accept plastic bottles giving credit at the till.
Dawn, volunteer waste advisor

Is there any control of our exported waste being sorted on boats without any being dumped overboard
Anon

You want us to recycle then give us the correct size bin with collections every 2 weeks there is often too much plastic and paper to fit in the bin. Why should we say for extra bins give them free.
Alan, Oxford

I am a widower living alone. I would like a rebate on my recycled goods. Currently, I recycle all my paper 2 a charity recycle bin.
Alan Mabey

People need education on why recycling is important. Poole says recycle for Poole. I feel this is the wrong tack. We all need to recycle for our future & our childrens future. We all live in the same world & have equal responsibility for its upkeep.
Helene Moody, Poole

A Reduction in product packaging and biogradable solutions. Also with cheap items we are encrg a dispos society. Also home ecom shld educate the art of menu planning and taking a shpg list.
Anon

Frances Kennet talks rubbish about the oxford scheme. Most people are quite happy and the recycling rate has doubled.
Neil, Oxford

Make rubbish easier to recycle. Why is it left to end users to sort out. Standardisation at manufacture is the way ahead.
Paul, Bicester

Food waste could go to pig feed as after the war if it was collected.
Anon

Use less packaging and reduce prices instead of two for one. Local produce, less travelled lasts longer?
Karen, Sussex

Most people want to do good and would respond to changing carrots.
Lisa Chandler, Basingstoke

The gov should be charging manufacturers who lumber too much packaging onto consumers and why do we have the mindset that we should make a profit on recycling? If we produce waste we should have to pay the price for it's disposal.
Roger Cloud, Hants

I believe the government would do well to treat people as citizens with their own free-will and volition, as opposed to believing that every individual choice can be macro-managed by central government policy. If peoples individuality is respected, community-minded behaviour often follows.
MB, Southsea

I recycle. It's hard because i have small house with no garden so my house is always full of rubbish. My dust bin men are awkward and unhelpful. They refused to take 2 extra bags last week despite many times my bin being only half full. When that happens i get mad and put my recycling in black bin rather than having it round the house thinking if they don't bother helping then why should i?
Anon

Why don't we make materials with the rubbish
Anon

We should recycle no matter how low the cost, it an environment problem and we all need to responsible 4 our future and the planet
Anon

All can be solved if manufacturers were forced to ensure all packaging is made from recyclable material. Currently too much confusion as what is recyclable
Anon

The private landlords , students and major big stores are to blame for recycling and rubbish issues
Anon

Lets get more of the big recycling bins in more common areas. e.g paper, glass and recyclable plastic. I remember a lot more 10 years ago
Anon

Burn rubbish and filter toxic gases don't land fill
Anon

I'm one of those people that have always recycled even when I've saved it up in my tiny flat and had to drag it down to the bins on foot. Now - after years of promises - the council takes it away but I am shocked that some friends of mine STILL don t bother - even though most of the effort has been taken away for them, they still can't be bothered..so yes I think either a financial incentive or a fine to persuade people to do it might be in order.
Miranda, Brighton

Rather than councils compelling people. Recycling should be voluntary. Willing people will do it properly and there will be less contamination. Also wheelie bins are everywhere forming a horrible eyesore.
James, Southampton

I live in Reading and re-cycle my waste - it is easy and a matter only of routine. As for the waste which is accumulating (eg paper) why not use it as part of road improvement schemes ( e.g the Reading/M4 scheme) as per the M40 programme which used pulped Mills and Boon novels to provide base/hard core?
June

I do not require a weekly collection as i recycle. I would like to have my council tax bill reflect the amount of waste i contribute to landfill.
Anon

Bins emptied once a week or twice a week. With all the other problems of the world what a selfish and parochial attitude.
David in Dorset

Councils need to supply more bins not just at super markets. More variety of bins ie for tins, plastics. And provide free different coloured bags included in the council tax. This is what happens in France.
Jacqui Carr, Isle of Wight

I think rebates for every tonne of recyclables would encourage householders to take an interest. Or leisure and fitness vouchers or pay the rebates towards paying for home insulation, and other energy saving items.
Jack

My parents live in Germany have recycled 4 years they have 2 do it with every thing so why is it a problem here!
Anon

Stop junk mail and wrapping and stop harassing old and careful.
Helen Q.

Why can t some prisons be turned in re cycle plants where inmates sort the rubbish
Anon

Sweden has been recycling 4 a great many yrs & pays money 4 drink cans.
Bet, Hove

Recycling is good but we as a country have no reliable way of disposing of the recycled rubbish. Weekly collections are a must.
Anon

Councils should offer more reverse vending whilst stores and manufacturers should be more involved in taking back and reusing expired goods. Bring back deposit bottles for instance.
Anon

Surely the government should invest in waste to energy machines, to end the need for polluting landfills?
Andy, Bournemouth

Recycle the way they do in Germany. Each house has different bins for different items and if you put the wrong stuff in them, your bins dont get emptied. That way people have to do it! We should also do like Europe and have collections more than once a week.
Richard

Why is it that we are pressured to recycle more and more but factories etc can produce tons of unrecyclable packaging for shops to pass on to the shopper it should be stopped at the source.
Kim, Bracknell

There is no solution we constantly get our money robbed people waste their time recycling the world will never change taxes will always be here to stay
Anon

Why are some large plastic containers not recycled.
Graham, Shoreham by Sea

People are recycling, with spiralling cost on council tax and no improvements + constant cuts in service they will stop + think sod it
Anon

I used to recycle but overnight my recycle bin was stolen and the council wants me to pay for a new bin hence am paying a lot of council tax.
GM

No national infrastructure for waste only county councils. If this was gas or electricity we would think it prehistoric
Anon

Financial reasons were the driving factor behind re-cycling. Make it an incentive 4 the public. Where does the money go and 2 whom?
Chris

It should be easier to do the right thing than to do the wrong thing.
Anthony Da Vall, Steyning

I think we should get between £100 and £200 a year off our council tax 4 recycling the councils make enough money off the poor and working class its about time we got something back
Anon

Recycling should be a normal activity, not one you need to pro-actively undertake. All waste ought to be re cycled at source not carried to a centre 10 miles away!
Mike, Portsmouth

What is the point in recycling now as it is being stored in warehouses costing more than it is worth.
Phil Hoggett, Winslow

Make it easier for the less green among us. All in one bin, let the depot sort it, the technology exists
Anon

We all spend a lot of time at work why make companies pay to recycle. 58p per bag.
Billy, Owton

Need to make it much easier to recycle, ie plastic. Some is ok some not
Anon

Deal with rubbish at source. Tax heavily the supermarkets. It might then be more profitable for then to let the consumer determine the quantities they buy.
Anon

Recycling in a recession is pointless but politicians dare not say so because of the green lobby.
Mike, Winchester

The idiots suggesting bi weekly bin collection have never lived in multi occupancy town flats.
Rex Waygood

If you gave me a section type bin for use at home i would recycle
Anon

There are loads of schemes, most just cant b bothered an have the attitude leave it 2 someone else
Anon

Surely priority must be recycling 1st. Then income.

We asked you whether you thought social cohesion has been eroded over the last decade

We have recently moved to sutton scotney in hampshire and are appalled at there insular negative attitude towards outsider s there is no community spirit here unless your a local.
H

Community spirit has been eroded by centralised supermarkets, my nan used to take me to the green grocers, fishmongers, bakers, milkman, a different world.
Eugenie, Worthing

V interesting programme! Where can lonely people meet in Brighton, other than pubs?
Gary

I'm not lonely. I have church, u3a, and a family who give and need support.
Dinah, Guildford

I love petersfield and everyone there. Its such a good atmosphere and everyone is so friendly
Anon

As an ex councillor community is still part of life but not all sectors are involved the blame culture is very prevalent rather than taking responsibility because parents both work people do not know their neighbour or the elderly in their street
Anon

Your programe on now at Petersfield is just talking about well Petersfield is an awful place to live shops are awful and community here is nil not the best place to live unless u have plenty of money we live in a Park Home called Broadway Park and they ripp all the old folks of and we get no support from East Hampshire does nothing to stop Tingdean Homes doing this
Anon

I moved recently to a very small town in search of the good old fashioned community spirit i cant believe my luck i an now a part of a very exciting town!
CHARLIE WINSLOW, BUCKS

Our towns are being killed by the internet and councils are still charging high rates for shops so they cannot compete
Anon

To address the issue properly take your evening news show out to a different place every day
John in Frimley

I live on Hayling Island where community spirit is alive and well. We look aftr 1another and the local Businessmens Club raises money which it ploughs back in2 the community. A good place 2 live.
Ann Arnecke

Yes i totally agree - i have been living alone for 9 yrs am 62 and full of life still but have nowhere to go to meet a partner that doesnt cost a fortune! I am on oap - use buses and charity shops to get by. Regards - happy but lonely lady.

No community built too many 4 bed detached houses unaffordable
Bill Clark, Poole

There is no community in worthing
Anon

Do u think that economy has driven everyone to be less community orientated
Adam Chandler Ellis in Brighton

Community spirit has been dying out 4 the last few yrs.i live in banbury oxfordshire and community spirit has all but gone.

Sunday 30 November 2008

We asked you what you thought about pub closures and how they could be kept open

The closing of pubs is closly linked with the demonisation of a drinking and smoking culture, along with a much larger middle class who only frequent a pub for the occasional sunday lunch.
Anon

A pint of coke at two pounds ninety will put most off when its one pound a litre in shop what a joke
Anon

Alcohol is the 5th most dangerous drug known 2 man,as now proved FACT by medical experts, its the biggest drug problem in the UK,& biggest GROWIN drug problem in the UK,it doesnt need 2 b made cheaper,it needs 2 made Illegal!!
Anon

Joe O'Riorden is right labour have killed our society pubs and no smoking is a major contribution . Now kids are at risk cos they'll do it at home when they drink there
Anon

Why should we pay 3.50 a pint to stand outside to smoke!? Thats why we drink at home in the warm
Anon

in our village we had 5 pubs and now are left with 1 which is teetering. as a non drinker it does nt affect me much but its sad to see lovely old world pub s disappear. dont know how we can stop this.
Glynis, West Sussex

In nova scotia canada u can t buy alcohol in supermarkets only in government wharehouses this would stop the problem of buying cheap booze in supermarkets and would help to cut down on teenage drinking. They are only open at certain times of the day. Maybe we should take a leaf out of their book.
Sonja, Hants

How can a pub show a profit with rent and rates exceeding £50k for a village pub
Anon

Its not just about costs. What about the other industries that are affected by the pub trade? All the door staff that are put out of work by the pubs closing down.
Becky

Why on earth go to a pub only to have to stand outside it to enjoy working mans sins. I havn't been to a pub since smoking ban was introduced, and wont ever go again even though i am now a non smoker.
Anon

It is only 3.50 a pint because the Publicans rent has gone up. They are living hand 2 mouth & every time the Government & breweries raise prices, the Publican has to. They cant compete with pub chains. Opening all day also means they have 2 staff pubs all day. They cant shut as the loyal few will go elsehere.
Maria, Isle of Wight

My local pub seems 2 b thriving. It has changed 2 a free house & you can now spend a pleasant evening without smelling of smoke. It has attracted back its old customers & new ones, many of whom are women. Its been a renaissance 4 us!
Nigel, Southampton.

Maybe if pubs had invested in decent air filtration years ago pls stop going on about how smoking ban hurts
Anon

Its the price of water that is outrageous not beer. Adios
Anon

Pubs encourage sensible drinking in a way cheap supermarket booze really doesnt, the government continually advocating more responsibility towards alcohol why does a pint in a pub cost barely less than a four pack in my local supermarket? I cant go to my local and drink myself into oblivion so why with drink related deaths at an all time high are we being tempted to go for quantity over quality?
Katharine

We live near the Horns. It moves with the times providing a great place for high quality food and a family atmosphere. Other less sucessful pubs could learn a lot.
Steve Nimmo, from Colehill

Its nothing to do with supermarket prices. I havent been to a pub since the smoking ban
Anon

Pubs shold be given choice of smoking or non smoking
Anon

Smoking ban. And the goverment greed on alcohol tax. Has ruined a great british pastime. Gary, Bournemouth

Hi wimborne once had 26 pubs in the town now only about 6
Anon

We really think the smoking ban has alot to do with it.
Anon

Spain are part of the eu but they still smoke in bars. The hotels allow smoking in rooms and have a smoking lounge.
Anon

Brewery rent too high
Janet Woolmington

I'm sure its cheaper for the mp's to drink in the house of commons than for us to go for a quiet pint now!
Anon

I would visit more pubs if they let dogs in
Anon

I wont go bingo even cant smoke
Mrs Wort, Andover

The people of France and spain have more guts 2 stand up and refuse the smoking ban and france doesnt tax alcohol as much
Claire, Sussex

It s Not Just The Smoking Ban It s Also Antisocial Behaviour As Well
Anon

The downfall of the pub is also highly influenced by the rise of the pub co s. Pub managers are stifled and if they manage to make a profit the rents often go up.
Anon

Pubcos are mainly responsible. They are UK s biggest buy to let landlords with enormous debt. In WW2 brewers dropped their rent to keep the beer flowing. Pubcos cant afford this and they must go to the wall before pubs can recover. Getting rid of the beer tie will do this and save pubs.
Mike

Y dont the government look at the history of y pubs were established . We are going back to the gin days.
Chas

perhaps landlords shd b able to become smoking only pubs,Leaving non smokers 2 go elsewhere.
Fay, IOW

Quite frankly, I couldnt care less if all the pubs close! Coming from a family of alcoholics I say ban alcohol period!
Anon

It has already been said about the smoking ban and before its too late why dont the goverment just try setting up one pub in every town or city
Ray Finch

Ive just come back from tralee ireland every pub there has a smoking room in the pubs because no smoking didnt work as long as the room has window go ityou can smoke and the pubs are starting to fill up again
Anon

The key to the problem is that most pubs are owned by pub companys Who view pubs as cash cows with no interest in tennants or customers. Root problem... greed.
Ray

The biggest single breakdown of the british pub is the smoking ban. people will always find a few extra pennies for a pint but if freedom of choice is stolen away they will desert them
Anon

I think the smoking ban has been one of the major issues in the closure of pubs. This government talks about choices. Why weren t publicans/breweries given the choice to have a smoking or non smoking pub. Then customers could choose where they drank. A pub is a place to go to relax and unwind and talk tofriends. Give people the choice.
Peter Day

I think peoples lives r so buisy that it is easier and cheaper 2 have a drink at home. I luv going out wen I rarly do. I do go out 2 pubs in daytime sum times 4 lunch n coffee. Got 2 have good cheap food n good coffee.
Anon

The smoking ban is the main cause. I used to spend ten thousand pounds a year in my local on food friends family beer cigarettes. Now i save this to buy a few bankrupt pubs to sell as houses. The social life of uk has been killed by the smoking ban.
Rachmann

I dont want to drink in a gastro pub
Anon

Could we not use failed pubs as youth hostels etc instead of losing them
Colin, Salisbury

Once again the govt introduced a stupid blanket policy with the smoking ban, rather than allowing landlords to decide what they felt would be best for custom.
Anon

The pub smoking ban is the government s attempt to make the people good by act of parliament
Anon

To survive pubs will have 2 become more than drinking dens. provide community functions not found elsewhere, live music, book clubs, art etc.
Anon

Perhaps it is a good thing that men stay in their own homes to relax and spend time with the family.Pubs were popularised in the days of men living in tiny cottages of one room up and down and twelve in the family and nowhere to sit comfortably after a hard day s work. Not true today so the need has gone.
Anon

Simple answer - halve the duty for pubs and restaurants, and double the duty for off - sales.
Dave Watkins, Bucks

We were excluded from pubs for years by the smoky atmosphere. We got into the habit of avoiding pubs for years. It takes time for up to change. Binge drinking keeps up out of town in the evening.
John from Reading

Council tax rates going from 0 to 700 per month, no smoking and now a recession. Our club is facing closure after 40 years.
Anne Kea social club in bicester

Maybe there should be a subsidy for pubs with a over 25s policy that way the high prices will still target the binge drinking minority.
Anon

It is all as a result of Blair extending hours with cheap town pubs. Village pubs are best but you have to pay. I am very happy to do this.
Paul Harris, Fleet

Its not just pubs. Its supermarkets. Internet. Charity shops all hitting the shops in the high street.
Martin

Old used to take young, they respected the old, not now
Anon

No-its not a shame people r drinking at home. The roads will be safer with less drink drivers. so although pubs r closing down, there r too many pubs anyway. better to have fewer more quality pubs and safer roads. Home drinking is cheaper and safer all round. i am very happy at the way things r going.
Emma

People r drinking at home because the smokers r the drinkers and who wants to stand outside this weather we shud hv had choices smoking or non smoking and decided for ourselves
Anon

We have a real pub it has no music no pool table the land lord is rude and it cost a fortune no body wants to go in anymore because it has no atmosphere thats why we drink at home because we live in a village and its the only one they get away with it
Amy from Barton Stacey

£2.75 a pint thats reasonable it would cost £3 at my local
Geoff Knight

a no smoking bar and a smoking bar allways worked in the past and there is no reason why it can not work now
Chris Hill, Gosport

I think that LANDLADY is BEAUTIFUL and that helps her pub
Anon

Pubs r a business and they need 2 diversify and broaden horizens such as super duper coffee machines and cake etc.
Cheryl

1. The brewers cane their tennants.they make it impossible 4 the tennants 2 make a living. 2. Real ale & wine were taxed more but alcopops werent.
Maz Archer

When i go drinking my friend he outside smoking im inside on my own
Anon

Some breweries have put in tempory managers to run a pub down to capitalise on the land for housing
Colin, Salisbury

It doesnt help when mr brown puts the beer duty up under the blanket of the vat decrease. we are being wiped out by our own government.
Anon

The real reason so many pubs are closing is the smoking ban and the tax.
Anon

I used pubs 3 or 4 times a week- but not any more due to the smoking ban. All the people who were for the ban dont use the pubs anyway.
Anon

ban on smokers kills pubs
Anon

The government want less pubs because, less pubs means less problem drinkers, and less strain on the n.h.s.but they ouerlooked supermarkets takeing over with cheap booze causeing more strain on the n.h.s.and police resources.the answer to the problem is easy, help pubs from closeing, and put a total ban on all a sale of alchol from anywhere except the pub and of licences.
Mark, Banbury

Pubs are going under due to the smoking ban. It s a reaction against our ever more facist state.
Anon

Pubs aren t as clean and inviting as when we were young. Too many regulations for health and safety make it impossible to enjoy a quiet pint.
Amy, Haslemere

Just to expensive. Simple as that!
Jim Watters

simple. cant smoke.

We asked you what you thought the government should be doing to get us fit and healthy:

Is gordon brown going to diet to motivate us
Anon

I know sum of the food i buy is not healthy but i cant afford the other food
Sam from Southampton

bad food is big business, we should have heavy taxes on bad food and subsidise healthy fresh food, that way it will actually be cheaper for us to be healthy.
Stuart Devlin, Southampton

I would say there is an intelligence problem born of poor school and home education if people do not understand that a banana and apple are not part of the 5 a day.
Mr A.Page

Obesity came with the boom and will disappear with the burst. There is no obesity in war time. We have too much to eat and the food too rich in ingredients.
Don

We should have physical activity as a way of life. In school you should have specialist p.e. From the begining not at 11 like the current system.
Anon

It is about time we all took responsibility for our own health and weight
June Fletcher

Eu rules on Wonky veg and 24 hour drinking have helped fuel the obesity epidemic.
John from Reading

If parents dont know fruit from wine gums then we're in big trouble!
Anon

I think obese people should be seen helping there self before getting free help, wot about all the people that work hard keeping them selves healthy and fit. I think its wrong!
Tracie, Fareham

I was told by a doctor that exercise does not help with losing weight
Sarah in Fareham

I am in a group on Literlife diet.we are all charged by our g.p.s to sign the form.in my case 35 pounds .!! Plus 10 pounds per mth.
Jenny P

Why is most of the talk about free help for people that are overweight. More should be done to keep them from becoming fat in the first place. No matterwhat people say, it is simply a matter of burning more calories than you eat! The government should not have to dictate to people what they eat. People should take responsibility for their health or pay the consequences through higher taxes on junk foods.
Anon

What about a "FAT PACK"; a team referred by GP a package of care-support.
Frances Henton

Community coaches part funded by sport england part government all have had their funding cut many to lose their jobs at xmas all their hard work in schools down the drain our children need more sport not less

It is not always that easy to loose weight i am 46 with END STAGE COPD i eat vry little as i often dont hav energy but my steroids that keep me alivecause of to be large but i am treated as if i stuff my face non stop i would love 2b thin ? How will the goverment help me !!
Mandy P. West Sussex

Wht we need is free gym membership 4 all especially those who work! Teach all about food! I work from 7-6. I was offerd support btwn 9-5! Wht support would that b. Then even though it was subsadised it worked out as ?25 a month!
Anon

What is served in the K2 canteen there? Chips im sure! We have a problem in this country with lack of cooking skills and a culture of fast food. It permeates schools, canteens and homes. This is what we must change!
Tom, Oxford

I hope to have a direct meeting with gov in this connection - not to waste their resources dictating to schools or anybody about meals. Perhaps they do not realise their inaccuracies which I will bring out. Not sure if these are deliberate.
Anon

What happened 2 personal responsibility? R there no consequences 4 actions anymore. Y should the state provide 4 fat people. Stop givin support 2 the orginal sin through benefits an allowances.
Anon

Obesity is personal irresponsible eating & sheer laziness stop blaming the govt supermarkets & everyone but yourselves
Pamela, Southampton

its no wonder there is a problem when society is so mis led about food examples of this are white bread, we are led to believe is ok when it behaves like sugar in the blood no wonder diabetes is on the increase
Anon

I WOOD LIKE 2 C HIGH ENERGY DANCE LESSONS LIKE ROCK N ROLL & JIVE IN EVERY SCHOOL.

Bring back cookery lessons in schools and that could show a child how easy it is to put a meal together.
Anon

They talk about us al drinking too much i think soft drinks must b made cheaper When are we going to see proper savings (job cuts) in local government?
Anon

Hello schools need to teach more cooking healthy meals more hands on Why do i have to pay vat on my gym membership?
Mr Cowan, Brighton

Wht would b great is a mentorin scheme. Some one healthy budyin some1 who needs support. Encourage ppl buying from markets! Markets have great fresh food cheap! Teach ppl 2 cook!
Anon

What a waste of money giving people the opportunity of free swimming sessions to get fit. The obese will generally not expose themselves and the only people who will take advantage will be those who already take exercise. It will not encourage those in need to participate. You have to want to improve your health and no amount of government intervention is going to influence those in need. One needs to go back to early school education as families have become dysfunctional with no real role model to forge a healthier life style attitude.
Blinky Trewby

Why we are blaming super market and take aways for our own habits.junaid ,basingstoke Why cant we create fast food thats healthy, i d love to stop on the high street and by a tub of got stew. Home made?
Kelly, Oxford

The usual sad confusion of fitness and fatness by presenters who know nothing about their subject. Obesity is a result of what you eat and five a day is a nonsense
Anon

Eat and fat are similar in spelling. People should realise this. It makes me so angry.
James from Swindon

How come all the plump middle aged adults are preaching to all those slim children..? Educate parents. I am a teenager and the main problem is the unaware parent

Sunday 16 November 2008

We asked you what you thought could be done to encourage young people to take up science careers.

I have a master's degree in climate change and can't find work. The jobs aren't out there because of the credit crunch.
Alex, London

There is no money in science.
Robert, Hampshire

I have a biology degree but find i get paid much more to do an admin job than go into science. It is far too expensive to go on to do a masters degree.
Zoe, Haslemere.

I graduated last year with a chemistry degree but chose a job in finance because the salaries in chemistry based jobs were comparatively low even though the skill set required is far higher.
Richard

Chemistry is only introduced in secondary school in France, here it is done too early where lack of experiment and maturity put kids off for ever
Catherine Bell

There are not enough jobs for scientists. training is also poor.
Anon

Blame the new gcse and a level which teach about science and not the basics. In 36 years teaching have seen dumbing down. Now teach at a level what was o level.
G. Jones

The rot starts in primary school - kids come out unable to do arithmetic - which means they can't do maths later
Anon

my son has a natural talent in science but his teacher told me no one goes into science - get your message 2 teachers.
Anon

The bbc are to blame too. Bring back tomorrows world which will help stimulate people.
Andy Williams. Portsmouth

An extra year at university equals dumbing down.
Anon

Also need to address the issue of those who wish to gain the neccessary qualifications to access to university at older age
Anon

I work as a biomedical scientist in a hospital and can tell you that the money is appalling. People are no longer entering the profession as working for a supermarket is better paid.
Kevin, Portsmouth

My daughter is doing the 3 sciences and maths A levels - she loves chem and is lucky that her dad did physics and maths at uni, so helps her. She knowsshe wants to work in science - and she s not a geek! She parties, plays guitar and is normal. But she actually enjoys chem
Anon

Hi, my question 2 you is do you as pro scientists ever think that it will be possible to build a teleporter, or have they already been perfected?
Andrew West

I don't know what we're worrying about. It doesn't look like there's going to be a shortage of footballers, singers, or soap stars in the future and that's what society deems important. Soon science and maths will be dropped from the national curriculum and replaced with acting and singing lessons. Then everything will be ok.
Mark

Why bother to go the science and engineering route, which is poorly paid, when you can join the finance industry and recieve massive salaries and bonuses. It is, as they say, a 'no brainer' career decision. This is a no brainer! Take a look at the level of salaries offered in say the New Scientist, look at the level of training required for each job offered, then think what other careers or jobs a bright young person could take up for better rewards, and better recognition. Look at all the government funded research centres that have been closed down during the last 35 years. In the 1960s the agricultural scientific research service in this country was the envy of the world, and was looked up to accordingly, now most of the buildings have vanished or are rubble; the staff have retired or gone overseas. If you want to work in finance, or fashion and design, you train in those fields, not in low paid, unfashionable and, normally in this country, unregarded and unrewarded science. Young people are not idiots, they know where the rewards, financial and social, lie. Put money into science, build up the research centres in the public and private sectors, offer good well-paid careers in science and the students will come flocking. In the meantime, any student with a keen interest in science would be well advised to go to America. This country has been through all this before, in the early years of the twentieth century. But memories are short.
Lynn Peel

I have just heard your panels response to scientist pay in the UK. For your info I have a BSc in Chemistry, MSc in Pharmacology, and a PhD in Chemistry. I have worked in Universities as a lecturer and in industry as a chemist - the pay IS poor and does not match the skill level. Pharmacists who are grossly overpaid and Chem Engineers (who work for BP etc) are not the norm. In the US I was paid twice as much for doing the same job - the pay scale has to change to make science a credable choice for children.
Phil Reigan

We asked if you thought money should be spent restoring Britain's war memorials, or whether it was better spent on the living.

We must renovate the memorials
Anon

Divide the money equally between the living and the dead.

I thought it was supposed to be "lest we forget". Of course they should be preserved.
Guy, Weymouth.

Yes they are also a valuable record for family historians.

Memorials should b maintained
Anon

Yes, it is a huge amount of money but it was a huge thing that those servicemen and women did for us so I feel strongly that the war memorials should bemaintained in their honour.
Anon

We should be doing both. Look after our troops and make sure they are not forgotten.
Anon

Spend the money making sure our soldiers are better and more fully equiped so they do not become a name on a plaque!
Anon

A memorial where the names have been worn away is a bit of stone
Gideon, Reading

Councils waste millions on useless things cut back on that and keep the memorials.
S Howe

Its essential that the memorials are maintained. We cannot let these names be lost forever.
Anon

Its simply our duty to preserve them
Anon

If not for those who gave their lives then we wouldnt b able 2 spend money on the living of course we should care for our memorials.
Rebecca Mead, Bordon

Why not wrap them in elegant bespoke polythene covers and uncover them for weekends and special days. That would prolong the memorial s life at low cost.
David Sexton

I think war memorials do not need as much funding- maybe a plaque nearby depicting what the memorial says would be helpful- so that as the memorial erodes it is still possible for people to read what was once written on it
Stevie, Portsmouth

Paper records can be preserved more reliably, as in genealogy.
Janet. IoW

Must maintain them if not sacrifice will be forgotten for the world wars but also send negative message to current soldiers j Lund I think it should be spent on the living
Mr & Mrs Wort, Andover

Why not use our skilled prisoners to clean our war memorials, and spend what would have been saved on our soldiers and their equipment.
Colin Tugwell, Reading

Those heroes gave their lives for the living they would not want money spent on granite glory when ex servicemen are in need.
Maggie Henley

Get the fit people on benefits to clean the war memorials - it would not take much time - lets get some pride back in this country
Anon

Why oh why can t sme of these young offenders etc be given the task of maintenance as form of comunity service so easing cost?
Leonie Cobey. Pitton.

Salisbury has a city hall war memorial which the new unitary authority is trying to claim and control even tho bought by public subscription
Colin, Salisbury

Memorial restoration - whats wrong with using Lottery money 4 this work?
Brian Lawrence Swindon.

As the mother of 3 sons who have all served or are still serving in the Army, I think the Government should pay for the upkeep of the War memorials. I also think they should leave the sending of parcels alone. All our service people love getting them.
Vivienne Hughson

memorials should be looked after. What happened to gone but not forgotten. We should continue to honour those who have laid down their lives for our continued freedom.
Anon

With out even thinking for a second Yes they should spend the money on the head stones, they gave their lifes for our today. Would you swap places with one,
Mr Wallington Oxford.

Money should be spent on the war injured and should be invested in military hospitals ie haslar hospital
Chris Hill, Gosport

Money should be made available to restore an maintain war memorials, money is made available for modern art an such like, why then can the lottery fund not provide funds for such a worthy cause, we should not be allowed to forget how can we educate our children to honour an respect our fallen heros if we allow them to be neglected
Mrs Harrison, Hampshire

The purpose of a memorial is to remember. How can u remember if there is nothing to read to remember. I say spend the money on restoring. Some councils have spent £250 000 on a roundabout feature which has no purpose so is clever spending out of the question?
Anon

War memorials should be updated with the names of local service personnel that have lost there lives to keep the memorials relevant and in the public eye.
Anon

Yes the money should be spent if southampton can spend millions on compensation claims they can pay for the memorial.
Sam

Unable to buy help for heros wristband, why are they not in shops? Is it because we are to scared of upsetting other people? If it wasnt for our soldiersmany people would not be here,i am disgusted.you would soon want them here if there was an invasion.
Anon

We should maintain all our war memorials. Afterall we are free because of them..and the public should never be allowed to forget.
Anon

Isnt it time money and energy should be put towards ending wars?
P. Maclure

Fines from speed cameras should be used to fund war memorials and not more GATSO's
Anon

There are better things for people to spend their money on. Help the heroes for one. Most of the items are not used/not needed and irrelevant for personnel in iraq or afghanistan. It clogs the supply of more important items that troops actually need.
Adey, serving officer.

Restoration is important to remember ourr heritage i am ex-RAF AGE 76
Anon

The money should be used to provide the equipment to prevent more names being added to the memorials
Anon

The memorials should be maintained by the local community and regarded as an honor to do so. As for the parcels - essential moral boost for all concerned- should continue.
Anon

We shud preserve our war memorials in respect 2 those who fought 4 liberalising our world and giving us our freedom and setting a standard that we shud all acknowledge. Our history is important 2us. Even if their names r just kept in a big book or on a web site 4 us al 2c. Mayb it is. I dont know.
Anon

I personally believe as a retired Naval Commander who has lost a son at the Falklands, That the money will be well spent on our memorials! Keep it up gentlemen!.
Anon

Yes save and restore war memorials
Anon

Let the men who help our country, all be put on the wall for all to see the good work that was done.
Nevil, ISLE OF WIGHT

I hav so much admiration and respect 4 th ghurkas i nursed BMH Singapore 1965. We owe them big time!!!
Mo Serge

My late husband served alongside the Ghurkas in Burma in WW2. He d be horrified at this Country s refusal to allow them to come here. They were loved, respected and trusted by our troops. Compared with others we let in, we owe the Ghurkas a huge debt of gratitude.
L. Benfield. Bournemouth.

Yes it should be regulated but it works i have used irridology chiro and hopi and they work they are excellent
Anon

These therapies should not be regulated because this would legitimize brazen quackery.
Harvey, Worthing

Where are the double-blind studies...? We are told there isn't enough money for proven technologies. As a taxpayer, I have a right to demand value for money.
Anon

Most complementary or alternative thereps ar a complete fraud, i've tried most.and all that happens is ur wallet get very much lighter.
Mark

Complementary therapies are growing in success because people see the value and return regularly
Gerryd

I have had both acupuncture & reflexology IT DOES WORK & makes my severe arthris more bearable
Anna Chalk Wareham Dorset

Perhaps they should be better regulated by one of the norsk gods or maybe we could put another astral spirit in place to oversea these assumptive, placebo practices. How much does our my mind play in this self fulfilling act or healing?
Andy Plowman. Portsmouth

I m quite shocked that these alternative therapies are on the national health service. They should be paid privately in my view cos there s little evidence they work. Reiki is also controversial and not entirely safe in some view points. Spiritually some say its damaging so should definitely not be on nhs.
Anon

I had accupuncture on my very painful foot and it cured it! I also had it on my tennis elbow about fifteen years ago and the pain has never returned!
Mrs Pauline Longhurst

I think if it works for sum people fair enough .. We all have the right to choose if it works for them good for them.
Amanda Owens, Hove

Alternative meds. I can t believe the rude ignorance of the dr in talking over everyone. Why is the interviewer not stopping him monopolising the issue!
Anon

Its just a placebo but a placebo works acording to drugs testing and we think not taking drugs is scary only because we live in a pill popping culture
Anon

I get so much benefit fr alternativ therapies so if i am prepard 2 pay 4 it, y cant i hav them without people interfering?
Alison Tucker

If confidence in alternative medicine is as high as expressed why them have there governing bodies not carried out trials that are approved
Anon

GP's treat symptoms-with drugs- as seperate entities and don't understand the body's structure.
Anon

I had chronic back pain for over 10 years. After 4 acupunture sessions in 2006 my pains ended. I have not had to take any painkillers since.
Beatrice, Banbury

Good Morning yes i agree that all complimentary therapists should be regulatet. I am a Beauty Therapist and am proud to be fully trained and have certificate to prove it and am a member of THE GUILD OF BEAUTY THERAPISTS.
MARY, Worthing West Sussex

would not b standing upright without my chiropractor. All my gp could offer were pills i could not tolerate and was not able 2 treat the whole person. Your doc., on the prog., is blinkered.
Mary Adams

Re iridology, i knew a woman who was diagnosed with a rare auto immune disorder by her optician because of how her eyes looked. she had been to countless medical specialists all of whom had missed the diagnosis. changes in the shape colour and other aspects of the eye can be indicative of physiological disorders.
Anon

acupuncture is a brilliant relief for back problems it has been wonderful help to me
Marion Lawrence

two years ago my knees were so painfull i could hardly walk i bought a magnetic bracelet and now i feel no pain
Hether Scott

Ethical massage practitioners do not make claims that they can cure. However there are many benefits to be gained. We pay GPs through our tax do we not?
Anon

Complimentary theraphy do no harm & works. Orthodox medicine is run by pharmasuitable companies & can cause harm.
Terese, Dorset

Complementary therapies give the clients back the choice of which treatment they find beneficial.
Anon

TYPICAL OF AN IGORANT MEDICAL PRACTIONER 2 HIDE BEHIND THE REQUIREMENT 4 SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE. ALL TRADITIONAL MEDICINE DOES IS GUESS WHAT CAN RESOLVE A PATIENTS PROBLEM. 4 BACKACHE SOMETHING TO HIDE THE PAIN (PAIN KILLERS!) NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM LIKE OSTEOPATHY HAS DONE 4 ME. GET OFF UR ARROGANT HIGH HORSE & GET REAL.
IAN

Orthodox drs. Practice complementary as well because they then treat the whole body.not just the symptom, nhs homeopathic training is for gps. Orthodox is losing its way and side effects of drugs r well known,
Mrs Christine Jones

Complementary and alternative can and does save the nhs money - more harm is done to patients by orthodox medicine and its reliance on harmful drugs and furthermore according to the bmj only 13% of orthodox medicine is evidence based ie proven to be of benefit. Perhaps orthodox medicine should put its own house in order before it starts attacking the alternatives
C Odell, Hove

Treatment provided by nhs should only be provided after proper independent clinical trials have shown significant benefits. Anecdotal evidence should bedismissed.
Martin Evans

Chiropractic is not considered complementary or alternative within the international medical community. It is aportal of entry for diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions including acute and chronic pain. There are more published RCTs for chiropractic management of low back pain Then many medications and most surgery.
Edward Rothman, Clinic Director AECC, www.aecc.ac.uk

How typical of a politician to talk over others with opinions which differ from his own! Years of chiropractic have kept me mobile when NHS could do no more for me. I'm a retired nurse.
Anon

Scientifically proven medicines are now found to be useless
Anon

Your Dr. Would prescribe drugs produced by multi national drug companies who sponsor medical colleges & take Drs on training trips to exotic locations. This does not encourage them to prescribe that Co's drugs does it. Yer right.
Anon

I had Chinese medicine and it cured me of my sickness and the regular to could not help. The mp on the show is a bigoted idiot.
Anon

Homiopathy works on my poultry. So placibo it aint
Anon

Regulation and registration of any therapy is essential. my training is ongoing and i offer a free treatment to the doctor on your show.
Anon

I was told by the likes of the arrogant evans that my chest disease was only treatable by anti-biotics! I have had acupuncture once a month for the last 20 years and my bronchial problems kept under control!
Graham from Brailes

Hi. About 6 yrs ago i had keyhole surgery on both knee caps 4 arthriscopy. But found that my knee caps kept locking despite having physio from the nhs. Then i saw an advertisement for alternative medicine. The lady concerned did physio and reike and by the 2nd visit i could see an improvement after my 5th visit i have never had any problems since. Well worth the 100 pounds.
Clive

Better regulation, does the lady you interveiwed know that all complimentary therapists have now got to be qualified to practice, and after qualification have got to keep the proffesional qualification up to date. No trained and qualified person claims to be able to cure. Though treatment is important we also look at life style of the person, and what is going on at the time, looking at ways we can help the person change. We also have to remwmber convential medicine does not always heal.
Anon

Some treatments have been subject to scientific research. Acupuncture for chronic pain and allergy conditions are available on the NHS because they havebeen shown to work. The resultant reduction in lengthy drug taking has had benefit to the patient and to the NHS budget.
Fiona Wilson

Not all complimentary therapists are rogues. We want to help people. I am qualified in sports and remedial massage and have several success stories . The "federation of holistic therapists" do regulate and have a cppd points system to ensure therapists adhere to strict standards.
Anon

my brother went to alternative medicine clinic in bristol to be treated for bone cancer. months later he found out the treatment they gave him was no good for his condition. they never told him. they just took his money.

Natasha from Brackley

Lord of the rings is the best book ever! WHOOOOOOOOOOOO WHOOOOOOOOOOOO
Anon

And your thoughts on libraries generally:

I think multi-use centres are a brilliant idea. A new concept of the local pub-village green is what we need.
Phil Carr, Newbury

It is a great idea
Tim

Download now.. Library title
Anon

The Winchester Discovery Centre is fantastic and I look forward to seeing more across Hampshire over the next decade!
Ranil, Bramley nr Basingstoke

D.J.Craven.Gosport
(In fact they just happened to be rehearsing in there - Producer)

I work in a Hampshire Library & I feel I now work in a shop cum internet cafe with books as a sideline. We also hav less staff 2 do all this.
JC Pet

Why havent you looked at their ancient egypt exhibition? I took 51 children there last week and they loved it. Most of these children not been to library before-a good way to attract more people.
Sophy, Portsmouth

Library in poole closes at lunchtime!
M Cuningham

Library very impressive. But kids middle class where are council house kids!
Diana, Oxford

I offered to donate my once read books to my local library and they said they could not take them. No wonder the selection of reading material is poor.
Anon

I love reading but work fulltime so only have the opportunity to go on Saturday mornings. Also,in a busy life it would be helpful to be able to borrow for 5wks.
Anon

We have no new books at Library. We get new ones at the bookshop.
Nevil on the ISLE OF WIGHT

Central libraries should have all legal statutes on public display with cash budgets to support this and up to date very important
W J Clark, Poole Dorset

I need a QUIET READING ROOM. Other activities can happen in other rooms.
C. Stokes, Sussex

I have stopped trying libraries. I want to read newly published books. Books I have read about in reviews not books 3,4, 5 etc years old.
Naomi Bleaney, Hampshire

Many people in society today dont have time to visit libraries as by the time we finish work they are closed. Librabries are good for students and people with far too much time on their hands.
Liam Pearson, Portsmouth.

Hurray to discovery centres! Out with the fusty musties.

Jubilee library in Brighton is open on sunday and offers full service

About time - people don't care about peak oil or climate change. Only money talks.
Anon

We haven't fallen out with the car. 4 most of us its an integral part of our life. We're just being forced off the road by a government that sees the car driver as an easy target 4 excessive tax.
Kerran, Isle of Wight

The car isn't out of favour the price of fuel is prohibitive. We now do half our previous mileage.
Anon

I struggle to pay the rent, I'll never afford to run a car but I'll always be a petrol head. The car will never die, its a way of life.
Rob, Brighton

The world is running out of cheap oil-its only going to get worse! Things need to change big time
Clive (a founder of Westmill Wind Farm)

All sponsorship in Motor Racing Football Golf etc should cease while Banks are in crisis
Anon

We are taxed to much. Ecclestone and Mosley should not take so much money and the FIA should be slimmer.
A Smith, Basingstoke

I work at cowley what abt t electric mini
Anon

My bmw does 66.8 mpg.
Mike.Salisbury

For the first time FINALLY hear about Peak Oil and we must address how to help people travel efficiently and comfortably and this hopefully mean we become more careful for our fellow citizens rather than surely competitive. Lets be a society!
Christine

To cut cost of F1 and cut polution ban pitstops, limit fuel and 1 set of tyres per race. By doing this it would reduce speed and make the racing exciting which it is NOT now!
Keith Oxford

Take a look at the Transit Commercial Van. Should be supported by our Government to stay in Britain ?100million is small change considering the bailouts of banks. The Modern Transit has as much equipment as the top of the range car. It supplies into the biggest Ford market. The Transit is good enough for business and going out.
Kevin Soton

does james brown still fuel good??
Anon

Public transport must b public
Mike

But this IS still Ford's biggest market is Britain. Not Germany Italy Turkey or anywhere other than the USA...
Kevin, Ford Worker at THE HOME OF THE TRANSIT

We need charging points. I have a Gwiz but struggle with lack of charging points. I charge it at home from a Wind turbine.
Clive

Its all right for keith to say public transport but come to wareham we have a bus service once an hour
Anon

Hi,we could have had elec cars 20yrs ago oil comanes av stop that progres, i was riding in trakless idouble deck elec buses 50 yrs ago,im 61.

If Mercedes can run cars on water why don t we pursue this solution ? Nuclear subs use this method with no problem only using the oxygen.
Anon

Until a bus picks me up at my house and drops me off at work 20 miles away, i will carry on driving!

Politics Show, all parties should be calling for a windfall tax on the energy companies.
James, Oxford

Ministers are part of an elitist club and listen to no one but themselves the country's solutions are simple and straight forward just ask me
Anon

In a society of rising debt why are our university graduates starting out their working life in extreme debt and receiving no help unlike Scotland.
Bev

Why should we bother with multiculturalism? The more people you bring in the more congestion, traffic, pollution, demand for housing, strain on local services. We should be defending British values not promoting others.
Anon

How do you pay for these good causes? Stop paying the EU 100,000 a minute.

I work 4 the NHS, I am low paid and want 2 do better. Why is the money not there 2 train 2 become better through the health authority?
Anon

I'm 19 yrs old, up until i was 17 i was getting in trouble with the police, and i have a criminal record, i have just moved into the New Forest but because of my past i cannot get anyone to give me a chance and give me a job, even though i have turned my life around. i would like to see local employers given support to employ young people with criminal convictions in the past who have turned themselves round.
Anon

Labour has not done any thing to help us food gone up sky high and electric gas whey are going to lose the next election with Gordon Brown
Mr & Mrs Wort, Andover

If its a global problem why is it just a couple of country going into recession us being one?
Ian Grice

Why not relax smoking in pub laws. So working men and woman can at least relax in comfort. And stop all the fines we get.
Anon

Can't we hugely increase the tax free allowance & fund this by increasing the tax on higher earners? Tax credits are complicated & don't help all who need it.
Anon

End all quangos non producing waste give us a non bureaucratic working police force etc
Mr K Bawden, Berks

All of this discussion is about spending money. What about wealth creation.
Anon

We have three lots of building works at Abbotts Barton

Why don t Oxfordshire County Council build council houses? Also WHY do private lets to students NOT PAY COUNCIL TAX
Anon

I think there's too much talking in politics MPs need to start doing and stop shouting i could go on about every thing else but there's not enough room in a txt mps should start listening to the people who elect them in!
Brad in Banbury

NO ONE IS TACKLING THE LOWEST CLASS OF BENEFITS MENTALITY WHO COST THE COUNTRY BILLIONS WHO DON T CARE ABOUT POLITICS AND SEE BENEFITS AS A RIGHT NOT A PRIVILEGE. WITHOUT THIS DRAIN ON THE ECONOMY THE SOCIAL BUDGET WOULD BE MUCH RICHER. I AM RETIRED AND THE ONLY TAX PAYER IN A GHETTO
Anon

When will the government admit to it's major role in the credit crunch through a deliberate policy of non regulation of banks and their issue of unrestricted credit.
Independent financial adviser

We need the wage rises bosses on millions that should have been divided between workers but have been keeping back to inflate their own very rich incomes. Governments are having to subsidise the greed of the super wealthy.
Angela, Bognor

Pensioners need a decent pension to live on like most of the EU countries - the state pension doesn't even pay the rent

Stuff the estate agents. I blame them and the government for letting the housing market get out of control. They could print their own money!
Anon

Charge just 5 pound to patient who visit NHS. Then only the person who really sick will visit NHS. Coz 50 percent patients are acting as sick.
Anon

When was the last time those on minimum or average wages received the rises of at least 6% that big bosses on millions a year award themselves? As for Gordon Brown, the knives are out because he won t do all he s told by those really in control, and he is in their view doing too much to TRY and help the average Joe.
