The Wrong Track

Brian Kemp
Train Diary
Brian Kemp, Architect
Travels from Manchester Victoria to Selby occasionally. The journey should take 1.5 hours

The trains at the moment cause real problems with my company whether we're trying to get to London or up to Newcastle. Tend to find it easier now to go by the car, otherwise meetings are being put back.

At least going by car you can set your own agenda - You can set off at a certain time

I had a 2-hour delay for a meeting the other day because the trains were late so we certainly find it easier now to go by car. Instead of going by the train obviously we've had to go down by car, which means you're setting off fairly early in the morning.

I'm going from Manchester down to London so we're talking about setting off at say 4 in the morning to actually miss the traffic on the M25 going in to London. So between 4 and say 7 o'clock you'll get down to Luton.

At least going by car you can set your own agenda. You can set off at a certain time. You know where the drivers are going to be on the motorways so you can allow for that. Trains you can't.

My message to people who run the railways
If I was running my business like the railways, our clients would be really upset. Deadlines have to be met, contract has to be finished on time, and certainly the trains at the moment aren't doing that.
