How we count migration
Shoppers in London's Oxford Street
The UK's population is now more than 60 million
The Office for National Statistics calculates the figures for population and migration in a number of ways.

The Census

This is produced once every ten years. The next one will take place in 2011. Mid-year estimates are also carried out.

International Passenger Survey

This is a voluntary survey of a random sample of passengers entering and leaving the UK by air, sea or the Channel Tunnel.

Around one in 500 passengers are interviewed - 0.2% of all visitors to the UK.

There are also other adjustments to account for transient populations like asylum seekers.

Surveys are undertaken of those who emigrate.

Births and deaths

The number of people born and the number of people who have died within any given area.

NHS patient records

The Office of National Statistics counts people moving from one GP to another within the UK, to calculate internal migration.

Worker Registration Scheme

From May 1, 2004, most nationals of the new EU member states, except Cyprus and Malta, who wish to work for more than one month for an employer in the UK need to register under the Worker Registration Scheme.

The charge for a first application is £90.
