BBC's Panorama won four awards

The 2004 awards saw Panorama being rewarded for its journalism over a wide range of national and international topics.

John Ware, Mike Rudin and a big team from Panorama won Home Current Affairs for "A Fight To The Death" on the eve of the Hutton report, a factual account of the fight between the government and the BBC and some of the events surrounding it, described by the judges as

"... a brilliant programme, a tour de force tackling the biggest and most difficult story of the year. It combined meticulous investigative reporting with an original approach and the drama intercut with reality was both bold and effective."

Sarah Barclay won Specialist Journalist of the year, largely for her film "Miracle baby grows up". The judges felt that

"The overall winner displayed a real commitment to their subject matter, a compassionate tone in their reporting and a hunger to uncover new facts in the chosen subject. This resulted in a compelling and humane film."

"The New Killing Fields", reported by Hilary Andersson and produced by Darren Kemp, also provided a major contribution to BBC One winning News Event for its overall coverage of the crisis in Darfur.

There was also an award for Fred Scott, who won Camera Operator of the Year. He shot "The New Killing Fields" as well as "The Killers" (on the Rwandan genocide) The judges said they were

"... immensely impressed by the work of the winner in a year of outstanding entries. His photography was spectacular and was at times so beautiful the judges said it was as if they were looking at a painting. The winner filmed people with immense dignity and his pictures told their story."
