Fiddling the figures
A syringe
Panorama: Fiddling the Figures will be broadcast on BBC One on Sunday, 29 June , 2003 at 2215 BST.

Panorama uncovers disturbing evidence about what some hospitals are doing to achieve the government's National Health Service (NHS) targets.

One former NHS chief executive tells the programme that failing to meet targets was considered a "sackable offence" and a senior consultant says managers allocated him "zero minutes" to see a patient who wasn't considered a priority.

A former finance director also reveals what happened when he discovered his hospital was altering the figures for cancelled operations.

What's the price being paid for modernising the NHS?
