Jim "Doris Day" Gray
Jim Gray is the UDA brigadier who controls east Belfast.

He has been nicknamed Doris Day because of his dyed blonde hair, flashy gold jewellery and a penchant for flamboyant dressing.

He is not a man who is short of enemies, and has previously been in conflict with the rival paramilitary organisation the Loyalist Volunteer Force before he fell out with the supporters of Johnny 'Mad Dog' Adair.

Gray was shot in the face last year in an attack thought to have been carried out by the LVF in retaliation for the murder of a senior member of the LVF. It was this shooting that ignited the current feud.

Closing ranks

Gray pointed the finger of suspicion at fellow UDA commander Adair and accused him of setting him up for the assassination attempt.

As a result, the other Brigadiers within the UDA closed ranks against Adair.

One source at the time had said that an attack on Jim Gray was an attack on the whole of the UDA.

The attack happened in September 2002 when a gunman walked up to him and opened fire.

The gunman then chased them firing more shots, but Gray managed to reach Garnerville police training college where he was given first aid.
