Ben Elton
Ben Elton, who is one of the best known comedians in the country, was born in Catford, London in May 1959.

The youngest of four children, he came from a serious academic family, with both parents working as university lecturers and his grandfather a classical historian.

Ben got into the entertainment habit at an early age, writing his first play at the age of 15 before heading to Manchester University to study drama.

It was this move which shaped his future life, as his time in the north-west saw him meet fellow students Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson.

Blackadder

After graduating, Ben embarked on a career in stand-up comedy, and he quickly became a regular favourite at the Comedy Store in London - often sharing a stage with Mayall and Edmonson.

He quickly became known for his motormouth style and the politcal slant he added to his comedy, but it didn't stop with stand-up as Ben quickly gained a reputation as a scriptwriter.

He teamed up with his university friends for the classic comedy The Young Ones, but also co-wrote the Blackadder series'.

Ben certainly keeps himself busy. Having also written several bestselling novels such as Gridlock and Popcorn, a stage musical (We Will Rock You).

Away from the comedy, Elton has always been passionate about politics and world issues and has been a vociferous campaigner for fairtrade over many years.
