New Net rules announced
Jane Corbin
Panorama reporter Jane Corbin examined the Wonderland Club case
Nineteen months after the Panorama investigation 'The Wonderland Club' exposed the activities of an international ring of paedophiles operating on the Internet, the industry has now announced new measures to deal with the problem.

Panorama highlighted the content of certain 'newsgroups' - areas on the Net which contain illegal material showing graphic sexual images of children and images of child abuse.

The programme interviewed a paedophile who said that he and others found their way into the Wonderland Club through such newsgroups.

These newsgroups were freely available to subscribers even though the names of many of them freely advertised the content as being images of the sexual abuse of children.

Illegal material

The Internet Service Providers Association was challenged on the programme to remove these newsgroups and admitted that they knew the nature of the content.

Nicholas Lansman of the ISPA told Panorama: "I am not going to deny that these newsgroups do exist and some of them do contain illegal material".

Now more than a year and a half later the industry's watchdog, the Internet Watch Foundation will recommend its members in the UK no longer carry 51 newsgroups which regularly carry child abuse images and a further 25 with names that appear to advertise or advocate paedophilia.
