THE ORPHANAGE
Laura (Belén Rueda) has idyllic memories of her childhood in a rambling orphanage. As an adult she returns to the now abandoned house with plans to open a home for disabled children.
Her young son soon makes many imaginary friends there but then suddenly disappears without trace. As Laura begins a desperate search for her child sinister events begin to unfold. But will our guests be hiding behind their popcorn?
The Orphanage is directed by J.A. Bayona and produced by Guillermo Del Toro. It is showing in cinemas now, certificate 15
GOD OF CARNAGE
French playwright Yasmina Reza made her name in the UK with her hugely successful play Art which ran for seven years after it opened in the West End in 1996.
Art was the story of three friends who fell out over a painting and in her new play, God of Carnage, Reza touches on similar territory exploring the hidden tensions beneath the surface in relationships.
She also continues her regular collaboration with director Matthew Warchus and translator Christopher Hampton in the drama which centres on two couples who meet to resolve a playground fight between their sons.
Ralph Fiennes, Tamsin Greig, Ken Stott and Janet McTeer play the parents whose good intentions soon descend into a war of words, exposing tensions in their marriages as well as between the couples.
God of Carnage continues at the Gielgud Theatre, London until 14 June.
NEVER SO GOOD
Howard Brenton's new play for the National Theatre traces the life of Harold Macmillan with Jeremy Irons taking the lead role.
It starts with his traumatic experiences in WW I and follows him as he is cuckolded by his wife Dorothy (Anna Chancellor), serves his time in the political wilderness with Winston Churchill (Ian McNeice), and then outlasts both Churchill and Anthony Eden (Anthony Calf) to become Conservative Prime Minister in 1957.
Never so Good continues at the National Theatre, London until 24th May.
ACCELERATE REM
REM's new album Accelerate is the band's first studio album since Around The Sun in 2004 and the 14th of their career. It returns to a traditional REM sound by mixing heavy guitars with Michael Stipe's distinctive vocals growling out politically engaged lyrics.
Produced by Jacknife Lee and REM, with all songs written by Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills, the album also features long time collaborators drummer Bill Rieflin and guitarist Scott McCaughey.
Accelerate by REM is released by Warner Brothers Records.
CARLA BRUNI-SARKOZY
Our panel will be looking at the media excitement sparked by the Sarkozys' trip to London, in particular the launch on the international scene of France's new First Lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.
Christie's timed the sale of a naked print of ex-model Bruni to coincide with the visit but headlines were dominated by Mme Bruni-Sarkozy's dress and poise - what did the headline frenzy tell us about Franco-British relations?
