The results are in and have been counted.

Some weeks ago, Newsnight and Newsnight Review set about discovering the cultural tastes of our viewers with a series of online surveys. The profile it's conjured has proven both interesting and surprising.

In the last of this series, the panel of Newsnight Review discussed the results listed below, but Newsnight editor Peter Barron also gave his own response to the results:

"The biggest surprise was the triumph of The Holy Bible by the Manic Street Preachers, an album which I suspect most quintessential Newsnight employees have never heard. On the whole we're not big Manics fans, but I understand they like us.

"On the music front it was surprising that the Beatles didn't get a look-in, and at least Gavin Esler and I were disappointed that our viewers don't share our admiration for Led Zeppelin II.

"The other categories were more predictable, and of reassuringly high quality - we had lived in some dread that the Da Vinci Code or Bill Bryson might triumph - but we should never have doubted our viewers' high, if slightly conservative, literary standards.

"They played it very safe on theatre too - four out of the top five were Shakespeare - and our Culture Correspondent Steve Smith's film list was so obscure that I'd suggest there isn't a single viewer out there who shares his neorealist tastes.

"The best choices I think were the works of art, where Picasso's Guernica pipped Michelangelo's David. Not a Young British Artist in sight, but no chocolate box either."
