Four years ago, Newsnight's legendary election camper van made its final journey off the cliffs at Land's End to a watery grave.

In 2005 we wondered what could ever replace it. Then from the ashes an idea emerged, accompanied by the sound of rotor blades.

If the party leaders were abandoning the battle bus in favour of more agile, 21st century transport then so must Newsnight.

The Newsnight election helicopter was born.

Over the next month, Newsnight's Michael Crick will take to the skies and go below the radar on the election campaign.

Our Robinson 44 helicopter can reach any part of Britain within 2 hours, so if the Deputy Prime Minister happens to punch a man with a mullet, Michael will aim to bring you the details from the spot.

He'll also be coming in to land in the constituencies where the fiercest battles and dirty tricks are being played out.
