England riots: Sir Hugh Orde defends police tactics

The president of the Association of Chief Police Officers has defended the way the police handled the recent riots in England.

Speaking to the BBC's Newsnight, Sir Hugh Orde said the police had faced an "unprecedented situation" with "unique circumstances", and insisted that cancelling leave to increase the number of police on the streets was a decision made by senior officers and not the home secretary.

Broadcast on Thursday 11 August 2011.
