  1. It was Clement Freud. He recounted on BBC radio show Just a Minute how he had used the joke to deal with a heckler at a public meeting.
  2. Paddy Ashdown won a decisive victory against former deputy leader of the Liberal Party Alan Beith to become the first leader of the Social and Liberal Democrat Party. Lord Ashdown led the SLD, later the Liberal Democrats, until 1999.
  3. It was in 2010 that the Lib Dems returned no minority MPs - they remain the only main party without ethnic minority representation.
  4. Willie Rennie of the Lib Dems was the surprise winner of the Dunfermline and West Fife by-election in 2006. However, he lost the seat to Labour's Thomas Docherty at the 2010 general election.
  5. The Lib Dems returned no women MPs in 1983. In 2010 seven female Lib Dem MPs were elected to Parliament. The Conservatives have 48 female MPs and Labour 81.
  6. Lembit Opik lost Montgomeryshire this year. The only previous time in a century that the seat failed to return a Liberal/Lib Dem MP was in 1979 - when Conservative Delwyn Williams received most votes. He lost the seat after one term to the Liberal Alex Carlile.
  7. Roy Hattersley is the author of David Lloyd George: The Great Outsider. Lord Hattersley told the Guardian he was urged to write the book by Labour's Roy Jenkins, who disliked Lloyd George "so heartily that he could not contemplate writing the book himself".
  8. It is former Lib Dem MP Julia Goldsworthy. She is special adviser to Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander and was shadow chief secretary to the Treasury from 2006 to 2007.
  9. Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, is 58 and this year topped a 'most fanciable MP' survey. Second place went to 49-year-old Labour ex-minister Caroline Flint.
