How to win the general election

It has been said that the 2010 election is likely to be fought and won on just a few small areas.

Using an election map, Newsnight's Emily Maitlis explains how every seat in each constituency plays its part in the "bigger picture", and how vulnerable particular seats are.

On the first day of campaigning, she outlines the scale of the challenge that David Cameron faces, if he is to win the election outright and what Gordon Brown needs to do if he is to stay in power, by looking back at previous election results.

Broadcast on Tuesday 6 April 2010.
