Why did forecasters get winter weather so wrong?

It is a fundamental British human right to be able to complain about the weather and the weather forecasts. However with modern technology, why is it not possible to forecast such a severe cold snap with more accuracy and further ahead?

Newsnight's Science editor Susan Watts reports.
