Hoon defends leadership ballot call timing

Geoff Hoon has said he and Patricia Hewitt wanted to give Labour MPs a chance to resolve the leadership issue "well in advance of a General Election".

Speaking on Newsnight, he told Jeremy Paxman their aim had been to allow "those same MPs who will complain in private" to have their say, but that opportunity, "by and large, had not been taken".
