How best to counter terror in the UK

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has defended the UK's military mission in Afghanistan in his Lord Mayor's banquet speech, saying that the mission is vital to stop al-Qaeda from using the country as a base for attacks on Britain and elsewhere.

Richard Watson considers whether the sacrifices being made in Afghanistan are necessary or whether it would be more sensible to concentrate on the home-grown threat in the UK.
