Berlin Wall archive: The exodus begins

Six days before the Berlin Wall finally fell, 5,000 East Germans were given permission to emigrate from Prague to West Germany by the Czech authorities.

Newsnight presenter Donald MacCormick spoke to foreign correspondent Brian Hanrahan who was in Berlin to gauge reaction to the building events.
